I am very bored right now and I was arguing this with a guy at a wedding the other night (btw...this guy said he wants Peavy bad, yet wouldn't trade Samardzija for him...huh??), anyways:

Which position (pitcher excluded) would you most like to see upgraded this offseason?

I would like to see SS upgraded. Not sure how that choice will fair around here, but here's why; I am not a Ryan Theriot fan. He had a very solid year and I ate some crow along the way, but I just don't want him at SS in '09. Now obviously if the Cubs could acquire someone like Tex, Holliday or Manny I would enjoy that very much and would take those upgrades over SS, but I just don't see that happening.

With a lineup of Ramirez, Sori, Soto and DLee (should combine for close to 110 HR's), I can live with Fuku/Reed/Pie/Theriot/DeRosa/Hoff P and a very solid starting SS. I really want to shore up the middle of this team's defense and there is no better place to do it than SS. There's some idiots on this team and a leader out there could really do some good IMO. I definitely am not advocating punting a lineup spot, thinking Orlando Cabrera or Furcal (those guys aren't on huge bat levels by any means).

Opinions? What's your choice?

I would say corner outfield and/or first base. The thing is, those 3 spots are 3 out of 4 highest paid position players. Fuku was terrible, Soriano is very underwhelming, and DLee hit for less power than DeRosa.

We can't expect DeRosa, Theriot, any of our CFs, or even maybe Soto to repeat the years they had last year and if we get the same crap from Lee, Soriano, and Fuku, we're going to be in trouble.

Trading Lee might be necessary if we can get in the mix for Tex. That sucks because I really like DLee and he's a great guy, great defender, and pretty good hitter, but we can't get 20 HRs and not a ton of doubles out of our #3 hitter at a premium offensive position.

leadoff...obp+speed...whatever position it ends up being.

We should also look to upgrade the position of "Veteran Leader" and "Clutch Performer".

Don't forget 2B! Who knows if one of Mark DeRosa, Mike Fontenot, Ronny Cedeno, or Ryan Theriot won't be able to play there and put up good numbers again?

Luckily EPSN and Pepsi's clutch performer of 2008, CC Sabathia, is available.

Left Field. I can't stop dreaming up wacky scenarios where some fool takes that contract.

Also, am I the only one who thinks Pie and Fukudome might not be all that horrible?

come on

come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

I think it might be his first post ever that didn't use Soriano's name, though I know he's referring to Soriano by saying leadoff spot.

1st base and right field. Personally I'd like to see Soriano moved as well, but that's not as big of a priority. We need a #3 hitter that can hit more homers than ground ball double-plays, at the very least. And obviously we don't have anybody good at all to stick in RF.
