Well the season has started, weirdly, in europe. my flyers are looking pretty solid this year, except that derian hatcher might have to retire, ryan parent is out the next three months with a shoulder injury, and randy jones probably needs hip surgery - meaning that the flyers are almost guaranteed to start the season with an 18 year old defenseman in the starting lineup. yikes.

i'll take montreal in the east and detroit in the west, detroit wins again (yawn)

Couple of notes from the first few games I watched this year (I watched parts of ANH/SJ, BOS/COL, and VAN/CGY). Anaheim isn't that good. They're playoff good, but I don't think they're going to contend for the West or even the Pacific. San Jose is much, much better than I thought depth-wise (especially if guys like Michalek and Setoguchi can continue progress and if Marleau and Cheechoo can return to form). Boston has more offensive weapons than I thought they would. They should make the playoffs. Steve Bernier seems like a great fit with the Sedins.

Can't wait for the first Kings' game on Saturday.

Kopitar signed for 7 years :D

Kings season-opener in SJ tonight. i suspect we'll get steamrolled but i'm really excited to see the team this year.

Are they even going to be able to compete this year, or are they going to be similar to last year? I didn't follow their offseason moves.

they're handing over the reins to the kids. 3 rookies starting tonight (including 2nd overall pick Drew Doughty), Dustin Brown named captain (with Kopitar being an assistant). They're going to be exciting, probably about what the Hawks were last year.

Blues went down quickly 3-0 today in Toronto on Canadian Thanksgiving, only to come right back with three in the first six minutes of the 2nd period. Sure, a 5-minute major on Hollweg helped.

Boyes already has three goals on the season and Tkachuk has four. Wow.

sounds like jack johnson is going to be out for up to 3 months. no word on the actual injury, my guess is dislocated shoulder now that i remember the play it happened on.

i guess we'll get to see how ready doughty is for the big time pretty quickly.

the kings claimed Kyle Quincey off waivers... i know we have at least one red wings fan here, remember anything about him?

And the Blues pulled it out today, 5-4 in a shootout. Sounded on the radio like a very entertaining game.

Berglund got his first and Oshie was a madman. The young guys just might make it a very interesting season here.

Alex Cherepanov, one of the brightest prospects in hockey, died today at age 19, reportedly after colliding with Jagr and collapsing on the bench

what an unspeakable tragedy

Cherepanov is dead. He collapsed on the bench on the 18th minute of the third period in the game against Vityaz Chekhov after a collision with Jaromir Jagr [his teammate on Omsk in the KHL]. He went to the bench and his heart stopped. He was taken to the emergency room at a local hospital where the best doctors in town worked for about an hour trying to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at 22:55 Moscow time (2:55pm EST). After the news the entire Avangard Omsk squad went to one of the local churches to light candles for Cherepanov.

According to comments on SportBox.ru it was [Jaromir] Jagr's elbow. Jarg is Cherepanov's teammate. Apparently Jarg didn't see him. Afterwards Jagr was shouting "Wake up Alexei" and was in tears.

I went to the Islanders home opener, and to my surprise, we scored four goals in the first period and won 5-2. I'm excited to see how we rebuild this team/franchise this year. Losing 7-1 today to the Sabres today was not fun.

I know the Canes traded away Jack Johnson and my impression at the time was that we got ripped, but I know next to nothing about hockey? How did that trade end up for the Canes?

Johnson is still slated to be an all-star. they got Eric Belanger, a good 3rd liner but they traded him away, and Tim Gleason -- 2nd pairing guy -- in return. they also dumped the contract of Oleg Tverdovsky. Really not a bad deal for them, but they could've gotten more for Johnson.
