the thing that kills me is that the core of the team that made the 2nd round of the playoffs a few seasons ago remains intact, yet the team is getting worse.

It's a lot of things:

1. Skiles lost the team, and no one has gotten them to respond like he did.

2. Team started playing for themselves more then as a team

3. The east has gotten much better

4. They got worse defensively (one example, Wallace to Gooden....as bad as Wallace was, Gooden is an embarassingly bad interior defender)

The first 3 are all coaching. Clearly NBA guys are coachable (as illustrated by many other teams), but the Bulls have hired a string of sub-par guys post-Jackson.

It's also pretty clear that teams don't win in the NBA without a superstar, and the Bulls haven't had one in a decade

I thought Skiles was an alright coach, especially for a young team that was still coachable. He was never the coach to take us to the next level, and I think Pax sensed that and canned him when the time was right.

However, knowing the team the Bulls have (athletically speaking) and seeing how the Knicks have done so far this season, the Bulls would be 100 times better this season if they had landed D'Antoni. I still can't believe we didn't get him.

"I don't want to play like this," Hughes said. "I'm not comfortable with 15-20 minutes. Something has to change."

Imagine if Skiles was coach and he heard that. Skiles would change something: he would give him no time or 5 minutes of game time.

These threads are almost as bad as the Cubs game threads.

You would think this team was expected to win 50 games.

Nope not at all, but you'd expect a little better effort than this. The Blazers are good but we should be able to stay on the floor with them.

Portland was one of two teams the Bulls could have beaten on this roadtrip. Now all that's left is Golden State.

Portland scared me a lot more than the current incarnation of the Spurs.

Jerry took to long getting back to him. Unforgivable.

It already happened. His name was Tim Thomas.

But Portland is young enough to let you back in games. The Spurs won't do that, even with Ginobli out.

Tim Thomas was a decent player too. Just the type the Bulls needed.

We can beat SA. Offensively, they are absolutely dreadful without Parker and Ginobli

Be happy with a possible 8th seed and first round knockout this year and a great rookie season from Rose, a little more development next year and then hope for Amare or Bosh.

How poorly Drew Gooden plays interior defense at C for us this year has little to do with our longterm prospects.

Tyrus needs to figure something out this year, though.

Exactly.

I don't really understand what some of you are expecting.

some of us expected that a playoff core plus two or 3 years of high draft picks wouldn't equal regression

I don't see the Bulls making the playoffs. I want them to tank and get a good draft pick. Boers and Bernstein made a good point - the Bulls need a revamped team. When the Bulls finally made it to the Eastern Conference playoffs, no one on the team when Jordan first joined was left. Deng isn't going anywhere and I could live with Noc, but everyone else needs to go. The offense cannot go through Gordon.

When I look at the upcoming players in the draft, I don't see much. I didn't know Rose and Beasley until late in the season, but I don't follow college basketball. I hear Ohio State has a good young center.

Is Rose your Eastern Conference All Star starting PG?

I'm expecting effort. This isn't baseball--things like chemistry and heart actually do matter. Prior to last season, this was a team that maximized its potential. Now they compound their relative lack of talent by not maxing out on effort.

I shouldn't expect Ben Gordon to dribble around dominating the ball and not deferring if he can't get our team into an offense. I shouldn't expect zero hustle on rotations or getting back in transition. And I shouldn't expect a head coach to be demure and defential when things like that are going on. That's unacceptable.

I think we all trealize this team isn't nearly good enough to skate by with lousy effort. That's what makes this really frustrating.

They were 33-49 last year. I think they'll be better than that this year. That does not equal regression.

Like UMFan said, the East has gotten significantly better over the last two years compared to the Bulls 49 win season in 06-07. All of his points he made were valid ones. Just wait until 2010 happens and go from there. I still think this team can contend for a 7th or 8th spot in the East, which would be more than fine with me.

Tank for what? Next year's draft class is pretty poor. I want to trade that pick no matter what, unless we were to land number one for the second year in a row.

I'd rather miss the playoffs and roll the dice in lottery. why get locked out of the lottery with a first round route at the hands of Boston or Cleveland?

Unless we get Blake Griffin, trade that pick.
