The following chart is from Buster Olney's article about the Yankees downfall. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=olney_buster&id=3589629&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1It shows the effectiveness of drafting from 1997-2005. Surprisingly, the Cubs aren't too bad. They've had 19 position players (t-7th) and 25 pitchers (5th) reach the majors. Note, this does not include Kerry Wood as he was drafted in 1996, so he would significantly boost these totals if you went back just 1 more year.

Look at the Phillies, their overall #s are somewhat low, but their numbers of at bats and innings pitched are pretty high per capita. Good job by them.

Kerry Wood was drafted in 1995. Todd Noel (of traded for Felix Heredia fame) was the Cubs first rounder in 1996.

Ah, yes, how could I forget such a prestigious pick. Nevertheless, Cubs better than I thought at drafting. Just no real superstars on the position player end, Soto's doing his best to change that, though.

It's the quantity over quality debate. Prior and Soto the two Cubs all-stars that remained with the team?

I can't recall if Garland ever had a strong 1st half and made the AS team?

The Cubs are boosted by players like Hinske, Lohse, Garland, Mitre, Nolasco, Willis, etc. who spent marginal if any time with the 25 man roster.

Garland made the AS team in 05 for the Sox

Hinske and Willis won ROY with the Blue Jays and Marlins respectively.

I think the article is just isolating drafting, though, as it should. The Cubs have drafted well . . . the fact that, maybe, player development isn't great or we've let some guys go, shouldn't change the fact that we were right to grab them as amateurs.

I've never had a problem with their scouting department, they have some outstanding scouts.
