'09 Schedule is out! (Cubs open in HOU; End at home vs. ARI)

Also, read somewhere that the Cubs might be ending their season at home against Arizona. Would be nice to end at home. We haven't done that since 2006.

That was the series at the end of May, wasn't it?

?? I meant the Cubs are ending their season at Wrigley vs. AZ, first time since 2006 that we would end the season at home.

He means the season ended in May.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people, mostly sports writers, write or say stuff like "first time since 2006", which implies it hasn't happened in a long time. That was 2 freaking years ago. I see sportswriters often write stuff like the STL is trying to get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They make it sounds like there have been several seasons since something occured when it was not that long ago.

Sorry...I just like when the season ends at home. It had nothing to do with making it sound like its been a significant amount of time in between occurrences.

No need to apologize, I just like letting the world know my pet peeves.

It doesn't matter to me where the season ends as long as it ends in late October.

The Cubs haven't ended a season against a divisional opponent since 2008.

That's a long time ago...er...in the future. I'm confused.

And the schedule is out. Cubs open in Houston.

I don't think they have it sorted by team yet, only by day. I'll try to put it all out nicely, but if you want to look now, here is the link:

Hard to find, but here it is: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=chc&y=2009&m=4

It's certainly strange that the Cubs host the White Sox at Wrigley on a Tuesday through Thursday followed by a weekend Wrigley series against the Indians. The series at the Cell is the following weekend.

The Cardinals only come to Wrigley twice, 4 in April and 3 in July. Same with the Brewers. That's messed up.

The other big thing is that the schedule doesn't start until April 6 and doesn't end until October 4.

If the Cubs open in Houston, how are they going to have the requisite Sunday night home game to hand out the championship rings?

They didnt have it last year, but if they wanted to do that they could make a 1 game series like they did this year with Washington/Atlanta

I like that the Cubs H/R schedule is much more balanced out that it was this year.

Yep, next year they play 81 home and road games. This year there are 81 home games and only 80 road games. Much more balanced out.

Please... you're making me mess up my pants. Prematurely, at that.

Ya, I think the only reason they didn't do it was because the Red Sox were already contractually obligated to open the season in Japan with the A's.

Hopefully they take a game vs. St. Louis or Milwaukee and move it to that Sunday so the Cubs can raise the banner in front of their rivals. God, that would be great.

I hate the 26 games in 27 days at the end of the year.

Looks like they're paying us back for all the road games in September that we had to play this year though. It would be nice to have another off day in there.

Posted

Can you guys stop talking about banner and ring ceremonies and stuff?

I don't care/believe in jinxes, but I don't need to get all excited about this stuff right now, damn. I hadn't even thought about that stuff.

Strange. We almost always play that first game and then have a day off before finishing the series. That doesn't happen this year, but we get a day off on April 14th in the middle of a 2 game Colorado series? Very odd.

They traditionally have that day off in case of rainouts. In this situation we will be playing in a dome. The Colorado series is our home opener, hence the day off in case of rainout.

I know they give the day off in the middle of a series the first of the year so they can have a day to do a make up for weather (with a roofed in stadium that's not a problem), but I don't get the Colorado series either. When I saw it I was trying to figure out if there was significance to April 14 or something crazy.

Gotcha. That makes sense.

Would've been funny if they'd scheduled the opening series with the Astros at Miller Park for fun....
