Lou finished before we could ask about the bunt. But I will tomorrow.

You're a good man. :)

Thank you!

Best postgame ever, though. A classic. In my time anyway. I wasn't covering when Lee Elia went off.

Really? It sounded rather tame on the radio. I guess it was one where you had to be there. Did he close the locker-room and tear into the team?

You, sir, are both a gentleman and a scholar, and there should be statues erected in your honor.

Yeah, he said "hitter's talk themselves out of being able to bunt." "It's part of the game, everyone should be able to do it." Then some idiot called about Pujols and Rolen being able to bunt.

i've actually heard lots of idiots make this argument. i think it stems from jealousy over players making millions of dollars and not being able to do something said idiots (incorrectly) believe they can do.

i like how everyone believes that a bunt is the easiest thing in the world to do. you have someone throwing the ball 90 mph at you, often coming inside or high on you when he knows you're trying to bunt it, and you have to (a) get on top of the ball, and (b) deaden it enough that the charging 1B and 3B don't get it too quickly, but not so much that it just dribbles in front of home plate and the catcher can grab it and throw for the force out. if it was that easy, most guys would do it effectively 90% of the time.

not to mention that lou continues to ask guys to bunt in late inning situations when they've hardly laid down a bunt all year. bunting against the bp pitcher who's hurling 60 mph meatballs down the middle is not the same as bunting against a reliever with a 95 mph fastball and a wicked slider. failure to bunt is most of the time not tied to laziness or lack of effort, despite what most moron fans would like you to believe.

i was absolutely beside myself when i saw Geo square around. for the first pitch or two, i was hoping it was a ruse and Geo was just waiting to turn on one. if Lou is going to make insanely idiotic calls like that he has no business blasting his team for playing tight or whatever crap he wants to make up about them "waiting to lose" or whatever.

Dear Lord, please let me live to see the day when a sacrifice bunt with anyone other than a pitcher is equated to something similar to...say...VD or something.

Lou's "roll up the sleeves" quote is awesome. Bumper sticker material. Let's hope it works and they can actually put some real numbers up tonight

Last night the Cubs took one more step closer to the NL crown.

Move on.

Lou making bone-headed moves and then getting pissy after a tough loss is not going to help this team. They need to be on an even keel.

This stuff happens to a lot of teams toward the end of the season

I just heard this on the radio.

I mean -- I don't necessarily have a problem with it, because Lou's not calling out any single player.

All the while I'm thinking -- what about that stupid bunt Lou? WHAT ABOUT HAVING ONE OF YOUR BEST POWER HITTERS BUNT!!?!

I wonder if any of the players are thinking that too.

Say what you want about Kaplan..but the guy bleeds Cubs and the guy is a Cubs lifer. He's a hardcore fan just like the rest of us here and has waited as long as we have to see a Cubs World Series appearance. Because of this, I sympathize and can't get on the guy for blasting Geo due to his emotions and Cubbie fan frustration. We as Cubs fans all do the same thing out here on NSBB every day.

But if I saw Phillips or that Orestes Whatever-his-name-is blasting Geo on Baseball Tonight, that would be different. :-))

I don't know I enjoyed the Jim Leland rant about his team last year or was it the year before?

I actually like it when a hitter squares up on the first pitch (as if he is going to bunt). Anything to shift the defense a little bit might be enough to punch the ball through the infield or over a defenders head.

But, to actually try to bunt someone over with someone like Soto is just plain dumb.

Brandon Phillips did it last night to get the go ahead run across. Although Phillips actually made contact, but it luckily went foul. Not sure how fooled the defense really was in that instance, since there were 2 outs at the time.

Yeah. I actually thought, "Soto, you crafty mofo making them think you're going to bunt so they move in at the corners."

Oops

I thought he'd just do it on the first pitch. Then he kept doing it. I was beside myself with disbelief. I still can't believe it, really. Cards are like, "OK, just pin Pie to 1st with some throw-overs, and let them hand us the double play."

The Sun Times recount of it said that Lou looked really angry and his face got redder as the interview went on.

Cool. On the field meltdown is surely on tap.

On top of that, the Cardinals seemed to be giving the Cubs tons of extra time to change their mind with all the attempts to pickoff Felix, as if out of pity.

I know. I really wish Bruce would have been able to get that question in. I want to know why Lou thought that would work.

I didnt listen to any post game reactions or read all 4 pages of this. First of all I want to be very clear that I am not in favor of the Sac bunt in the situation that Geo was called to do it last night.

Did anyone find some high level of hypocrisy that people were complaining that Soto didnt get a "good" bunt down, yet Soriano wasnt even called on to bunt in pretty much the same circumstance the next inning. IF one is to dog on Soto for bad fundamentals, than they would also have to dog on Lou for not calling the bunt in the same situation the next inning.

Lou is awesome. Just the sight of Dusty during the last series had me all upset.

Let's look at the other side of the picture for a minute. Runners on 1st and 2nd. An evil, good for nothing bunt moves the runners up. A grounder to second and Cards win. I hate LaRussa, but he knows how to win.

We left 8 men on base, seems like a common theme of late. I don't look at manufacturing runs as a bad thing. Seems to work well for the Angels which everyone seems to have a woody for.

Who did the great LaRussa have bunt in the situation you just described? A 20 homer guy? ROY candidate?

I understand what you are saying. I'm just not all up in arms over it. It could have went either way.
