No offense, but how hard are magic numbers to comprehend? I am not singling you out at all LLF, but it just seems like no one understands the concept of it.

 

All a magic number is is # of Cubs wins + # of 2nd place team's losses to clinch a division title/wild card.

 

So a magic number can be reduced by a Cubs win or a Brewers loss for the division. A magic number 18 can be achieved by 18 Cubs wins, 18 Brewers losses, or 9 Cubs wins and 9 Brewers losses, or any combination in between.

 

Not sure what you mean ... I don't see anyone here who doesn't understand it. MN is so simple you have to be positively braindead to not understand it.

 

When we're talking about the Cubs playoff MN I argued in another thread that MN is too simple and possibly misleading. It's like looking at the standings and only looking at the Games Back of the team immediately behind you, and ignoring the GB of the next team(s) below.

BTW - I just heard this on WGN radio. David Kaplan is reporting a funny story about Piniella and Sinatro. Apparently they decided to drive to Cinnci today instead of taking the plane. So Piniella googled the directions gave them to Sinatro asked him to drive and promptly fell asleep. When he woke up they were about 90 miles outside Cleveland....not Cinci! When Kap first reported the story (about 4:30 central time) they had just arrived at the ball park. As I understand it, Sinatro was just following the directions Piniella gave him.

 

I picture an old white guy version of Oprah and Gayle driving across America.
