We're treating this as good news. But check out the lede from the ESPN article:

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano has right rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, an MRI confirmed, a blow to Chicago's chances of winning the World Series for the first time in a century.

So is basically the best case scenario? It could've been a tear or fracture or something real bad that would keep him out rest of the season or the playoffs too..

The question is going to be, basically, whether Z with an inflamed rotator cuff something or other is better than a 100% Lilly.

Looks like they gave him a special MRI that didn't require the dye injections.

From a sound bite I just heard from Hendry, they injected him with some anti-inflammatories (cortisone I'm guessing?)

Is 1 week really enough to heal something that really inflamed in the rotator cuff? To make sure I'd keep him out 2 starts just to make sure everything is healed and doesnt flare up again.

Or just rest him (and treat him) and let that inflammation subside.

I agree.

But once we get into the playoffs, and especially if it gets deep in the NLCS again, I don't care if these guys' arms fall off.

Seriously, I would trade Z and Harden for a championship.

All I'm saying is, if Z isn't 100%, which he probably won't be, is that still better than Lilly when it comes to the NLDS?

I'd trade my left testicle for a championship.

So do I..Were a lock for the playoffs basically. So theres no need to sit him out for a start..Sit him out 2 or 3 starts so this crap doesnt flare up again when its close to October.

The NLDS is a month away. Since there appears to be nothing structurally wrong beyond inflammation, there's plenty of time for him to rest his shoulder and heal up.

What I am not totally happy about is the seeming indication that they're going to skip him once and be done with it.

The way the off days work out they'll all probably pitch anyway. The 1-4 guys that is.

We'll see how long they keep him out as more details emerge.

I gotcha! Lilly's going to pitch somewhere in the series.
