According to the score, Lou anounced that Harden will not get another start until a week from thursday. No pain or sorness or anything, Lou just feels that we have enough of a lead that he wants to give him a break and keep him fresh.

Also, Gaudin unavilable until Friday with a sore back.

A week from Thursday? That makes no sense, that's like 2 weeks off. I'd say he's more likely to get hurt that way. Dumb.

He's probably going to throw on the side in the interim so that shouldn't be an issue.

i really doubt he's just going to sit there and do nothing for two weeks.

So the season isn't over?

After seeing the results of Z's extended time off, can anyone be sure that Harden isn't in deeper trouble as well?

When they announced that Z was going to be pushed back in his start it was because he had a dead arm ect. The Cubs didn't just say we are moving Z back to get him more rest and keep him ready for the playoffs. To compare the two situations is taking a step that I do not believe this team has earned lately. If it was a couple of years ago with Dusty I would say sure but lately they have been pretty honest about injuries and such.

Okay now I'm worried.

Harden already has pitched more innings than any season since 2004, his first full year in the big leagues, and hasn't missed a turn for the Cubs. But before Tuesday's game, a cryptic pregame response from Piniella during a media session prompted a scramble to find out if Harden was indeed healthy.

Asked again why Harden was being skipped a full turn this time around, Piniella said, ''He needed the time. Obviously, if he could pitch, he'd be in the rotation.''

He needed it? Does that mean he asked for it?

''He needed it,'' Piniella said. ''Let's leave it at that.''

Harden repeated what he said the last few days: No pain. And no big deal.

''Didn't we talk about this yesterday?'' he said.

This is the worst possible time to be skipping guys' starts.

I'm not sure about that. I'd rather skip starts now than the middle of the month, when the schedule is going to be tougher. The 12th through the 25th is going to be the time to drop the hammer, IMO. Particularly during Milwaukee's 7 gamer in Philly and Chicago.

They may close a game or two on us in the interim, but that's where the Cubs can really put it away, I think.

Also, that 4 game series with at the Mets looks like it may be relevant.

Maybe, but if we don't win tonight, we're looking at Lilly, Marshall, and Marquis coming up... 8 game losing streak, anyone? Dempster's gotta stop it tonight.

this is great news. lou looks like he sees the big picture better than most managers.

Yea, except for that whole Bobby Howry fetish...I don't think even Dusty would ride that horse this hard...

what, when the cubs only have a 99.75% chance of making the playoffs? i'd say that's a great time to be skipping guys' starts.

I don't see how Lou should be given any credit for not pitching a pitcher who is obviously hurt. Lou should get credit for many things about the Cubs, but he has many faults too. The most obvious fault with him is his "doghouse" where players have been known to disappear for weeks at a time (i.e. Murton, Eyre, Wuertz, Marshall, Pie, etc.).

Rather skip them now and save the arms for the playoffs. The Cubs are making the playoffs no matter what, either as the WC or as the division champs. Once October is here, it's a whole new season. REST THEM NOW.

Well this doesnt look encouraging

Rich Harden-S-Cubs Sep. 3 - 2:14 pm et

Although he says he's not injured, Rich Harden isn't slated to pitch again until next Wednesday.

It makes sense for the Cubs to give Harden an extra couple of days off now and then, but they wouldn't be giving him 11 days' rest unless there was something wrong. Manager Lou Piniella practically admitted as much. "He needed the time, obviously," Piniella said. "If he could pitch, we would have kept him in the rotation." Be afraid.

Then again, its rotoworld and they by opinion more than anything.

All they're doing is taking the same story/quote we've seen and adding their analysis. They don't know anything we don't.

i like how 13-8 lilly, 9-8 marquis and 3-4 marshall are each locks to lose.
