Torn cartilage may end Jeff Kent's career

The Dodgers organization is expecting negative results from Jeff Kent's MRI and fear that his career may be over.

Kent has apparently been playing with some amount of torn cartilage in his knee, but the tearing this time around is thought to be much more severe. The MRI results should be revealed on Sunday, but Joe Torre believes this season would have been Kent's final campaign either way. "All the hinting seemed to say that this probably was going to be it for him," Torre said. "I really respect what he has done here, and I have been very comfortable with our relationship. He is a pro. I guess that is the only way you can categorize it." Aug. 31 - 8:24 am et

well, i cant really believe he had much of a career left anyway, the man is 40.

not that i wish his career to be ended by an injury, but i cant believe he had much left in the tank.

yeah, i was gonna say, his birth certificate puts his career in jeopardy.

lol, that's a good one.

Question for me now is whether he's a Hall of Famer. His candidacy is up in the air for me. Part of me recognizes that his counting stats are certainly beyond where they should be for a second baseman. The question then becomes how much of that is a product of the era that he played...if that even matters at all.

I like that Jeff Kent dared to take on a sacred cow. Bowing and scraping to people just based on their reputations is how we ended up with most of the country pretending to like Joe Morgan.

One possible effect of the steroids era is the voters may favor players that are borderline but they know are clean. Far as I know, Kent never got caught so his numbers carry more weight than say Jason Giambi's.

Yeah, that and the whole being the all time home run leader among 2b thing too.

I don't understand where people are getting this idea that HOF voters are just going to blanket leave out every player from the era.
