Soriano was up with runners on 1st and 3rd twice and couldnt get them in.

Edmonds was up with runners on 1st and 3rd and couldnt get them in.

Then there was that debacle in the 8th. *sigh* That and using your 2 worst relievers doesnt help your chances against one of the better teams in the NL. At least we probably wont have to see Cotts or Howry tommorow. I hope Zambrano makes his start and pitches well.

ok i threw a foam stress ball

that didn't halp

I would have hated to see you after the Victor Diaz loss, or the Playoff losses last year, or any of the number of losses the Cubs have suffered in agonizing fashion over the years. But, yeah, this was an aggravating loss, thanks to the horrendous umpiring, and the mid 90's Braves pitchers treatment Brett Myers received.

you're seriously picking the wrong person to do this to

why develop bad habits by trying to swing at bad pitches all games just cause the ump has a crappy zone?

You have to adjust to what the ump is calling. Can't just let him stand back there and call you out looking all freaking game long, even if they are bad calls.

And give the pitcher his easy efficient outs all game because you're making weak contact on pitchers pitches? No, thank you.

I know you're level-headed. I read every game thread. It was just kind of a throw it out there comment, because I've wanted to throw stuff over losses much worse than this.

He's just pissed because we were only 3 wins away from seeing Len and Bob switch facial hair styles. Give him a break!

Edit: Whoops, that joke was already made this thread.

by me, no less.

I'm not even stressed after this loss at all. I expected this series to be a split. Anything else is gravy in my book.

what pissed me off more than usual about this game was the horrific umpiring.

I felt like we didn't even have a chance in the 6th or 7th (whatever inning Soto and Soriano both K'd in after taking two outside pitches to fall behind 0-2)

Plus who knows what might've happened if we have bases loaded w/one out when Lilly should've been called safe

I also don't understand how Karros was insisting that Howard got him, even while explaining that his acting job was bad when he looked to first. Damn shameless 1bmen

Very true, but we got the calls the day before. Baseball has a way of evening out...

So, the K's aren't easy, efficient outs? Putting the ball in play will at least give the runners a chance at advancing (if there are runners on board).

Its not about learning bad habits. Its about doing what it takes to give yourself a chance to win when the ump is giving the opposing pitchers calls in a certain area that isn't normally a strike.

They're not hittable pitches. The Cubs approach still amounted to several scoring opportunities that just weren't cashed in. Had they given in to that crappy, inconsistent zone they likely wouldn't have even had those chances. And they likely wouldn't have forced the Phillies to throw 140 pitches. Swinging at bad pitches isn't a good approach EVER, even if the ump is calling more of them strikes than usual. It's not like those pitches had no chance of being called balls.

Tough loss. Going into the series, believe it or not, this game was the one I was the least confident about. And the Cubs lost it. No biggie. Let's take tomorrow's game and keep on kicking butt.

Lilly actually hung in there longer than I thought he would.

Oh well. We didn't get it done today. We're 7-1 in our last 8 now. The Phillies are a quality opponent, it wasn't likely we would sweep anyway.

It's just too bad that the Crew have such a laughable schedule comparatively the rest of the way. The real unfortunate thing in my view is the number of times we will be facing a quality opponent in September while the Crew has a tomato can to knock over.

They have 3 with the Mets coming up, then 4 @ Philly a little later, and they also have to contend with us 6 times.

All while having to make up a 5.5 game deficit (after tonight).

Not all that easy.

The loss doesnt disturb me. What does, is the fact that theres a decent chance that we face the Phillies in October, and weve had no clue how to get to their mediocre starters. Hopefully we can put old man Moyer in his place tommorow.

Overall thoughts on the game today:

-Another one of those "LOB" on games, only without the big inning (The 8th was supposed to be)

-The home plate umpire was a joke. The first pitch in the Reed AB almost hit the dirt.. the combination of his wide zone and Myers' effectiveness killed us

-Ronny Cedeno should never be used as a pinch hitter... ever

-Dick Stockton has totally lost it (if he ever had it) - although to be fair, the pitch that hit Victorino was probably gonna be called strike 3

-J.C. Romero is a DBag

-I think DLee is on the verge of a hot streak

-Aramis Ramirez is the clutchest player I have ever seen this side of David Ortiz.

Not all that easy.

The collective record of their opponents is under .500. Ours is over.
