Lilly actually hung in there longer than I thought he would.

Oh well. We didn't get it done today. We're 7-1 in our last 8 now. The Phillies are a quality opponent, it wasn't likely we would sweep anyway.

It's just too bad that the Crew have such a laughable schedule comparatively the rest of the way. The real unfortunate thing in my view is the number of times we will be facing a quality opponent in September while the Crew has a tomato can to knock over.

They have 3 with the Mets coming up, then 4 @ Philly a little later, and they also have to contend with us 6 times.

All while having to make up a 5.5 game deficit (after tonight).

Not all that easy.

The collective record of their opponents is under .500. Ours is over.

That's a pretty arbitrary method of distinction.

And, as I said, they're 5.5 games behind (obviously).

I just listed almost half of their remaining games, and in 6 of them (the ones vs. us), they have to play above .500 in to gain ANY ground.

Well, I just got back from the game.

That sucked... not only the loss, but the weather. I've got a terrible sunburn.

Yeah. The combined record of the Cubs' opponents could be one game over .500 and the combined record of the Brewers' opponents could be one game under .500 and that statement would hold true. Gotta go a little deeper than that.

Just be happy you didn't have to listen to Dick Stockton.

Plus the difference between facing those teams is probably pretty negligible over 21 games or so (however many non h2h games the two teams have)...

From the AP story:

Home plate umpire Chris Guccione, who was in the middle of a disputed call at first Friday, was involved in another in the fourth inning Saturday when the Cubs had runners at the corners. When Howard picked up Lilly’s bunt down the first-base line and tried to tag him, Guccione initially ruled Lilly safe at first.

After Howard protested, crew chief and first base umpire Tim Welke met with Guccione and ruled Lilly was out — even though replays were inconclusive on whether Howard tagged him.

Lilly said he didn’t feel a tag and didn’t see one on the replay, either.

The home plate umpire said that he wasn’t tagged. The first base umpire said he was tagged in the hip,” Piniella said. “One of them was right and one of them was wrong.”

Now, I agree that the replays on the play were inconclusive, but that was only the part about whether Howard got Lilly's foot with the tag. He missed Lilly's hip by at least 6 inches, and the replays clearly showed that.

CUBS are 0-3 over the last 2 years with Guccione behind home plate, averaging 2.7 R/G. Sounds like a conspiracy to me !!

I'm definitely going to be looking into it.

There was no way in hell Howard tagged him on the hip.

I'm sure Eric Karros is sure they still got him on the tag.

If he had gotten the tag on at all, he wouldn't have looked back to first.

And Lilly wouldn't have continued to run hard to first.

It isn't a matter of 1 game over .500 vs. 1 game under.

I believe the Crew's remaining opponents have a combined record of .488. I don't remember what the Cubs is, but it's not .501. It's significantly better than .500, including the Phillies. We're not talking about one or two games here.

I know it's probably not like that, I was just saying that your original statement was very vague.

Whatever, not a big deal.
