We need a LHRP. I've been saying it for a while but Cotts showed some flashes at times, but he really pitches to RH better anyway and lately he sucks. Plesac said pretty much this teams only weakness.

If we replace Howry with Guzman, I think our pen is fine. We're not going to get a lefty that is worth a crap from another team at this stage in the game. I'd be happy replacing the one guy who can't get outs with someone who can get lefties or righties out. I like Cotts not because he's done that great this year (he's mediocre in my book, fine for a 6th reliever), but because he has the ability to be effective against lefties or righties on any given night.

It's a shame Pignatiello fell apart this year for whatever reason. Coming out of spring training it seemed like would be a good, cheap solution from within the organization.

The Cubs have 4 RH relievers that hold LH hitters to a .715 OPS or less. LH hitters have only 2 singles in 24 ABs against Samardzija. Plus Cotts and Marshall are currently in the pen. They're fine.

I hope and truly think you are right. I guess I would like it all going into the post-season.

Scott Eyre has thrown 5 2/3 scoreless for Philly with 6K/1BB.

I guess they are holding out hope he might revert back to form in Sep. He still wont see any crunch time IMHO. Smardz was a godsend.

The whole getting rid of Eyre thing was dumb. They could have sent Cotts down to the minors for 3 weeks and then recalled him Sept. 1 with the rest of the guys. Instead, they let a guy go who had some value (real or perceived) and he signed with a team that is likely going to stand directly in our way to going to the World Series. Let's hope it doesn't come down to Eyre getting a hold or garbage extra inning win in Game 7 of the NLCS.

It's like Lenny Harris going to the Marlins, only about 500 times worse and 3 months later in the season...and Eyre is actually OK. Bad.

Eyre finishes the year with a sub 1.00 ERA and then gets out of a bases loaded NO OUT jam for Philly in game 7 of the NLCS against the Cubs.

Oh I agree, but They didnt need to just basically release him for nothing :cray:

Lou wouldn't use Eyre.

Lou isn't always right. And I'd rather have him taking up a large chunk of space on our bullpen bench than have him on the Phillies.

I'm not saying anything other than that Lou wouldn't use him. I don't know why.

Don't worry, Philly ain't makin' the playoffs - the Mets will get pay back for last season.

FYI, Sean Marshall as a reliever has allowed 6 hits in 29 ABs, for a line of .206/.281/.483/.764 vs. lefties. Almost the same numbers as Cotts vs. LHs (.220/.305/.480/.785).

Marshall gave up HRs to Hermida, in the series where everyone gave up a HR to Hermida. And Votto in his 3 HR game, the day Lieber gave up bombs to Johnny Bench and Chris Sabo.

I've been pleasantly surprised by how he's taken to the job.
