The wife and I will go check out the I-Cubs tonight. It'll probably be our last game this season. I wish they'd let Vitters play one game in AAA. I'd love to see him in person.

Anyway, they have good beer there and the park is really nice. She's preggers so that means more beer for me, although we started our semester today and I have class tomorrow.

Playoff Picture:

Iowa won the PCL American North division yesterday. They will play Oklahoma in the first round.

Tennessee is 6 back with 8 games remaining but they play their final 5 games against first place Carolina.

Daytona is 0.5 games ahead of Jupiter in the FSL. Daytona has 10 scheduled games remaining in 7 days (3 doubleheaders) - how many of those they actually play is anyone's guess. The D-Cubs end the season with 4 against Jupiter, so this one should go down to the wire.

Peoria is 7 back of the wild card spot with 8 games remaining.

Boise is 5 back of first place Spokane with 10 games remaining. 6 of their remaining games is against Spokane (3 in Spokane, 3 in Boise). Still a long shot.

The AZL Cubs are 4.5 back with 5 games remaining and a bunch of teams ahead of them.

The DSL regular season is over. The DSL Cubs 1 missed the playoffs by 1 game while the DSL Cubs 2 missed the playoffs by 21 games.

Jay Jackson:

Tell me what it's been like since you got drafted.

"I got drafted in June. Went to (rookie camp in) Mesa (Ariz.), did my physicals and stuff, waited for everyone to get there, went to Boise (Idaho) for a couple of weeks, then went to Peoria (Ill.) for a month, then got shipped here. I just go where they tell me to go. I'm having a lot of fun. I've been to a lot of places I thought I'd never see."

What's the one thing about you that people have no idea about?

"I like to goof off a lot, especially during the game. That's the way I keep from being stressed out. I'm in the zone when I'm between the white lines, but after that I goof off a little bit. I'm probably like Carlos (Zambrano) and Pedro (Martinez) when it comes to having fun in the dugout."

Kyler Burke, Boise

.478 (11-23), 9 R, 5 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 7 SO, 0 SB, .957 SLG

Since he was drafted in 2006, Burke has long been known as a player with more tools than present ability. When he hit .209 in his pro debut in 2006, no one worried, as Burke was cited as being one of the league's best athletes. The Padres traded him last season after Burke hit .211 in 62 Midwest League games, but the Cubs saw his potential. They moved Burke to Boise, where he hit .254 with some power in the Northwest League. After a brief trial in Peoria this season, Burke made his return to Boise, and this week, we are seeing the midpoint between his potential and his performance. Seven-game hit streaks have been rare in Burke's career, including five games in a row with an extra-base hit. While Burke's struggles against southpaws have continued in 2008, his .298/.366/.516 handling of right-handed pitchers is one of his best splits as a professional.

While he is still young enough to have a future, he is in his 3rd pro season. Would he have to be added to the 40-man roster after 2009 in order to avoid the rule 5? Assuming he goes to low A next year and finally has some success, he'd still probably be a good 2-3 years from being major league ready.

After 2010 I believe. Even if it was '09, nobody's gonna keep Kyler Burker on their roster all year.

Rain delay in game 1 for Daytona...

There might be a rain delay in Memphis too. We're getting hammered with the remnants of Fay right now. I think we'll try to go to the Wednesday game.

And some of those games may be in jeopardy. The remnants of Fay are expected to pay a visit to North Carolina later this week.

It's not so much the fear of losing him, but rather the likelihood of starting his option clock too soon, which could ruin whatever chance he has to develop further.

Well in that regard, I don't think they'd be dumb enough to roster a not so great prospect who hasn't played above High A, in which case his clock wouldn't start.

They rostered Cedeno too early, coming off a horrible season in what was a not at all impressive career to that point.

Burke has been getting some pub. If he goes out and has success next year at low A, I could see them rostering him. But if it's not until after 2010 that they need to, perhaps it's not that big of a deal.

Kyler Burke will have to stick at full-season ball before there's any chance he gets rostered if for the sole reason he has a dynamic lefthanded throwing arm and many in the organization would love to see him on the mound. If he's converted to pitcher, he'll take even longer to succeed in high-A and there's no worry about not protecting him.

Grant Johnson: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

ETA: Jinxed Grant a bit, he went out for the 7th inning and gave up 1 run while getting only 1 out. Tyler Colvin is 1 for 3 with a single.

I don't understand how a team with a higher winning percentage could be behind in the standings (no matter how many games they have played).

Just tally up the win and loss differential and you'll come up with a tally of Daytona being a half game back. This type of thing only happens when there's such a disparity in games played (Daytona has played 7 fewer).

That's interesting - then I wonder if the Daytona Cubs are miffed at all these games being cancelled instead of made up at a later date! It seems like it would be to their advantage to make those games up!

Grant Johnson does look alot better lately. I wonder about the present velocity because he looked terrible from the pen early on. Maybe he does have back-end of the rotation potential after all. Nice to see a 2001 highschool alumni regain some form.

There's only a week remaining in the season, so there simply may not be any time to make up the games. The only way they could be made up is if there are scheduled games remaining against the same teams.
