RHP Erik Hamren added to Boise's roster at the expense of Mark Pawelek, who appears to have some issues:

good lord - is this not Pawelek's 3rd season in Boise? The passport thing is just not *that* hard.

I know Canada gives a hard time to some people with booze/drug related charges on file. Maybe the "passport issue" was just that the Canucks wouldn't let the little bugger in their country.

According to Alex Maestri's blog (and Google's always questionable translation from Italian to English), Maestri had an MRI late in July on his shoulder which revealed slight tendonitis. He won't need surgery and rest would be enough - the doctors thought he would be able to throw by August 20th. The blog entry was on July 31st and he hasn't updated since. I'm guessing he might be in the Cubs plans for the AFL if he's recovered in time.

With no Cubs game on tonight, my air conditioner broken, and boredom setting in for me, I might be heading up to Peoria tonight. Blake Beavan should be going for the Lumber Kings and Justin Smoak will likely be making his debut for them, so it could be a good game to catch. Plus, I'm curious to see what Coleman looks like up close and in person.

Half-priced Mondays, woo!

Yeah, you get Beavan today.

Rain delay for the Daytona Cubs. Shocker, I know. All but one other FSL game has already been rained out.

The game should start in 15 minutes. Sounds like everyone's hunkering down for Fay in Florida, though.

MiLB.com[/url]"]Florida State League Pitcher of the Week

Jeremy Papelbon, Daytona

1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 11.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

It's a blessing and a curse, of course, but there's no question that after every success Jeremy has in the Minors, he will inevitably be compared to his brother. So when the Cubs decided to try Papelbon's hand at starting -- after 35 relief appearances this season -- it certainly flashed back to when the Red Sox had the same aspirations for their closer in 2007. While Jon ended up staying at the back end of the Boston bullpen, it sure looks like Papelbon is fit to be a starter. The left-hander has made three starts for Daytona recently, during which he has not allowed a run through 14 innings. Papelbon has allowed just six hits and a walk in the 14 frames. On Sunday, Papelbon won his second game of the season with a season-high six shutout innings against Jupiter.

Crappy replacement minor league umpire screws Daytona for the second time in a few days. Jay Jackson fields a comebacker with a runner at second and one out tagged that runner (about 20 feet away from a base) between second and third who was somehow ruled safe. On top of that, the base runner went out of the base path twice. And the home plate umpire has refused to meet with the crap base umpire. Catcher Steve Clevenger has been tossed. Manager Jody Davis has been tossed.

ETA: Robinson Chirinos is the new Cubs catcher. Runners at second and third, one out.

RBI groundout for the 2nd out. Jay Jackson gets charged a cheap earned run. Now another ground out.

Jay Jackson: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 GO-0 FO.

4th inning:

6-3 groundout.

K. Blows a fastball right by the batter.

4 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 4 GO-1 FO

That should be it for him. Hung-Wen Chen is warming in the pen and will likely try to pitch the next 2-3 innings (this would be a one-time relief appearance for Chen).

Micah Hoffpauir hit his 23rd HR for Iowa. LIX is 2 for 4 with a double.

Tyler Colvin is 1 for 3 with a single. Welington Castillo is 3 for 3 with a double.

REBEL is hitting below the Mendoza line at Peoria but he hit his 9th HR of the season and 3rd in two games. Coleman was ok: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

Jeffry Antigua gets the start for Mesa.
