hard to believe this is the same guy who had .300/.400/.500 JD Drew/Bobby Abreu projections

http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/matsuhi01.shtml

Maybe? I hope?

i was going to say the same thing. it's certainly possible he just needs more time to adjust. Matsui really only had one good month in his first season (1.157 OPS in June) and ended the season at .788 (Fukudome currently at .753).

I think that the fact that we're getting bonus production from our CF platoon compensates for the lack of production in RF. If the Cubs are worried about next year, they should slide Fukudome to CF and sign/trade for a new RF.

Bingo. Ideally, this would kill 2 birds with one stone if they could find a corner masher to hit #3 next year instead of Lee with Derrek batting #2 or #5 instead. Despite his batting woes, Kosuke is dynamite defenisvely and should be able to handle CF in a platoon with Johnson. Yeah, that's an expensive platoon, but you can't just leave him out there fulltime in a primo offensive slot if he doesn't drastically improve.

Was Tex a bad RF or is he going to stay at 1st from here on?

He has played 18 games there, 32 total in the outfield, and hasn't played anywhere but 1B since the 7 games he played in RF in 2004.

I'll defer to others since I really don't know, but if he can play it even just barely passably, I'd happily suffer through his defense for that bat...or hell, move Soriano to RF and put Tex in LF.

Soriano

Lee

Tex

Aramis

Soto

DeRosa

Theriot

Johnson/Fukudome

Or:

Soriano

DeRosa

Tex

Aramis

Lee

Soto

Theriot

Johnson/Fukudome

Delicious.

Wish he would be benched, soon. He hasn't gotten any better.

For who? Edmonds is old and brittle and might be losing his briefly refound luster...Johnson is not good against righties...Fontenot could easily regress with more playing time, plus any little boost you'd get in hitting is likely offset by the sharp decline in defense.

Hoff will be up in September.

In the meantime, the Cubs can afford to have one player in the doldrums so long as Lou bats him low in the order with the way the rest of the lineup is producing.

why's Lee going to waive NTC?

b/c he's so thrilled with his 2nd WS title that he doesn't mind being shipped out so the team can play tex.

If people are going to suggest that tex play the OF, I can't imagine my suggestion of trading Lee is the most far-fetched post in this thread. If we're bound by reality, tex's name doesn't come up.

i really don't think the cubs have the money to afford tex, and i don't know that he'd sign with a team that intends to use him in the outfield.

They wouldn't have the money under the current budget, but that depends on what the new guy does (and if they can get guys like Marquis out).

I balk at the idea that you can't put DeRosa at right and Fontenot at second because going from Kosuke to DeRosa is too steep a decline in right field. Plus, I'm curious about Fontenot. What is he? .725 OPS guy? .750 OPS guy? .775? .800? I'd like to have a better handle on what he is. Does he just go through crazy fluke streaks? More playing time would clear up the picture.
