Wow that's huge... clearing up cap space is an awesome move... looks like we'll be seeing more of Niemi than I thought at some point this year.

Does that really clear cap space?

I've really never delved too much into the financial aspect of the NHL. But if someone claims him, the new team has to pay his salary... so, yea?

Also, I just checked. Even if he clears waivers... he is "part of the organization" and will get paid, but it is not counted on the cap. So yea, it does free up cap space :)

In that case, I'm all for it.

The Hawks should act like a major market team. If that means eating $7M to clear up cap space and improve the offense, then so be it.

I think the Hawks came out hot in the preseason last year too, so I'm not going to get too amped up until the games count. But 3-0 is definitely better than the alternative.

Last year they didn't have Campbell and Kane & Toews were rookies.

I have read on TSN.ca and ESPN that this team is built for Campbell. And that all things are pointing to the fact that Campbell could have a career year being on the same line as Toews and/or Kane. He has looked amazing in the preseason so far... Also... the Hawks could arguably have the best PP team in the league this year.

i'm pretty sure that's just if they send him to the AHL. it wouldn't make any sense for that to be the case otherwise.

That's what Kuc's article said today. I can't imagine him going to the AHL. But I also can't imagine some other team paying his entire salary. But something will get worked out.

I'm not surprise about how high the Hawks are about Niemi, seeing as a few of the inside sources of the org sees Niemi as a Mikka Kiprusoff caliber talent. I don't how accurate that is seeing as I haven't seen Niemi, and we know not to take organization hype on certain players as anything more then a grain of salt. I am also not surprise that Hawks place Nik on waivers. You simply cannot have $12 mill invested in goalies.

HAWKS 1 || Bluejackets 7

Goals:

Kontiola

Assists:

Eager

Versteeg

Huet had all 7 goals scored on him :( Oh well, not the best defensemen out there anyways... but would like to get a better showing from our starting goalie.

Tonight, Tuesday Sept. 30th (7:00 PM Puck Drop)

HAWKS (3-1-0) @ Wild (2-1-0)

Looks like we're using our starters tonight after that horrible 7-1 defeat last night :)

EDIT: Just read that Havlat is returning tonight as well.

There is no stream or play by play I can check... I only have who scores and the score.

Well, Khabi cleared waivers.

Sens were thought to be interested, but their GM basically didn't deny their interest but stated that they only have $3M in cap space.

Perhaps that sets up a trade possibility. But I have no idea what eating salary might do to the Hawks' cap situation.

They are essentially $1.5m under right? I would assume they would have to count any portion of salary eaten against the cap this year, although if they trade him now, maybe that's all cleared. Regardless, it's not like they are going to be bringing in some big money guy at this point, there are no free agents, teams aren't giving up stars at the start of the season. I don't think the salary cap ramifications are that big, even if that's how they try and portray it.

Well if he cleared waivers and plays in the minors they still have to pay his salary but it doesn't affect the cap. If he were to be brought back up from minors to NHL a team can pick him up for 1/2 the cost and the other 1/2 would be paid by the bhawks.
