Marlins Inquire On Bengie Molina

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 3:31pm CST]

According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins recently inquired on Giants catcher Bengie Molina. Frisaro believes the asking price may be too high, but the situation is worth watching.

Molina, 34, is hitting .282/.313/.421 in 368 plate appearances this year. Molina rarely draws a walk or strikes out. Behind the dish, he's thrown out a third of attempted basestealers, fifth in baseball. Jason Kendall leads that stat by a wide margin, which is surprising to me.

Molina is owed another $2.2MM this year and $6MM in '09, plus performance bonuses for games started as a catcher. He has some level of no-trade protection, though it's unclear which teams are included.

Is this the same Jason Kendall that used the pitcher as a cut-off man on throws to 2nd base last year?

Yeah, it's incredibly frustrating to watch. But... I'm certainly not going to complain about our catcher situation now, just makes me furious Kendall couldn't have done that for us over the last couple months.

I caught an artical earlier in the season on Kendall. Seems he has lazer eye surgery in the off season. Not sure if he knew he has eye problems or not, but it sure seems to have helped.

I don't complain about Geo, but I do wish he was a little better on that. He's young though, plenty of time to learn..

Part of Sotos problem is Marquis completely forgets about runners all the time(not sure why when there are so many of them) and Lilly is extrememly slow to home. Id be interested to see a stat showing how many non throws Geo has had because he had absolutely no chance at the runner.

I don't think anybody is trying to convey a dissatisfaction with Soto. In my case, anyway, the thought isn't "Why can't Geo be that good", it's "Why in the hell was Kendall such a basket case tryng to throw out runners for us?"

Soto still throws much better than Barrett and just about everybody else who has had that job for the last few years.

I've gotta give some credit to our scouts/coaching staff. We've been running all over Kendall this series.
And that continued tonight.

Kendall's release is much more quicker and he's always had an accurate arm, while never having plus arm strength.

Early in his career, he was great at throwing runners out.
