Jeff Samardzija-S-Cubs Jul. 25 - 8:56 am et

Jeff Samardzija could start for the Cubs on Saturday.

Samardzija is expected to be called up to take Kerry Wood's roster spot on Friday, and the Cubs could have him make a start to give Rich Harden an extra day of rest. Nothing is official yet.

I just hope to god this doesnt mean that Hardens been hurting. If they are doing it to push Harden back a day, fine by me, but after last night, the pen is where we need out help.

please, no. what's the point of him taking Wood's spot if he's not going to pitch out of the pen?

also, on the selfish side, i'll be at the game and would rather see Harden.

If they want to give Harden an extra day, fine. Start Marshall. Shark needs to be used as little as possible in his stay here.

then he shouldn't be promoted. If you're going to burn an option on him, at least see what he's made of

Samardzija's option was burned back in March.

Plus this would push Harden's start to past the Milwaukee series. I'd rather skip his spot and have him pitch in Milwaukee than move him up to Sunday.

Think about this. Instead of Lilly, Zambrano, Dempster, Harden it would be Marquis, Lilly, Zambrano, Dempster

He was added to the 40 man when he was signed. Every guy on the 40 man is on the active roster in spring training. if they don't break camp with the major league club or on the DL, they burn an option.

I think his minor league numbers have shown what he's made of. His 40 IP in AAA while nice are too small a sample to disregard his lackluster performance at every other level. If he's used out of the pen, the 3-4 innings he's likely to throw while Wood gets his finger healed isn't likely to sink us. On the other hand, giving him a start in throwing away a game. If we needed to push Harden back and Samardjza was our best option, fine. But Marshall is an immensely greater option that Shark.

I don't really have a problem with Samardzija starting, and I don't have a problem with Harden not pitching in Milwaukee. But if that's the plan, then call up Wuertz or Ascanio for today. Marmol is going to be unavailable after 50 pitches in 2 days. Howry has worked 3 of 4 days, Cotts has worked in 3 straight days(although light usage), Gaudin has worked in 2 of 3 days(although light usage), and Dempster is coming off a 118 pitch outing. I guess the plan is hope that Dempster goes 7 and use Eyre/Marshall/Gaudin to finish it off? Hopefully the offense puts up 10 runs.

Gotcha, I didn't know that.

i don't like Harden missing Milwaukee, but the second part of what you've said here is the key. they need to add someone to the pen. calling up Samardzija to start doesn't do that [/Mr. Obvious].

Right now, I see 3 options more logical than Shark

A. Wuertz-we all know he ran over Lous dog or something, but he hasnt been so bad the he doesnt deserve a chance

B. Hector Carrasco-Hes an established reliever, whose pit up solid numbers in Iowa. If you dont bring him up for situations like this, why have him at all?

C. Chad Fox-now or never-either bring him back and see what he can do, or tell him thanks for coming out, but your not in our plans.

The 1.42 WHIP wasn't so bad for you?

This is the issue. We really need to have Harden go against Milwaukee.

Yeah, I only see 1 option more logical than calling Samardzija here.

Chad Fox's function for the Cubs this season is to be placed on the 60-day DL so if need be, Ceda, Guzman or Samardzija can be on the Cubs playoff roster without being on the big league team on 8/31.

This really worries me. Not to echo what everyone else said, but I'd hate to see Harden miss the Milwaukee series.

Yeah, what's up with Harden then? Unless there's some issue we don't know about, they should definitely want him out there against Milwaukee. This is an important series, obviously. He's 26 years old, and it's against the team that is 1 game behind. Something's up.

This is what Rotoworld got its blurb from from Gordon Wittenemeyer:

The former Notre Dame football star might even start for the Cubs this weekend, though that could not be immediately confirmed.

I wouldn't be worried. Rotoworld runs with stories in local papers so it's often good to follow up with the actual article. Neither the Daily Herald nor the Trib has touched on anything like this.

I suppose the optimistic way to look at is that Lou knows he'll only be up for a few days, so he may as well take advantage of the situation and A. give Harden an extra day off and B. see what Sharks made of. If He gets git hard early on, Marshall will be ready to go, and while we really do need an extra bullpen arm, theres nothing we have in Iowa thats really going to save the day.
