Roy Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner.

Apparently, the returns other teams are getting for top-talent pitchers such as CC Sabathia, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard has inspired the Blue Jays to at least find out what it could get for one of the best pitchers in the American League. It remains unlikely that they'd deal him, but you never know.

No to the Cards!!

Include Marquis to give them a ML arm to fill the rotation spot with...you'd probably need to give up Pie and Hill for sure...how much more do you think we'd need to give?

Vitters and Ceda would be a start.

Marquis + Cedeno + Vitters + Ceda + Marshall for Halladay and Eckstein.

How about that?

We're taking Eckstein to give them salary relief, right?

Well, if we give up Cedeno we're going to need a back-up SS. Eckstein fills that void.

Under contract through 2010...

08:$10M, 09:$14.25M, 10:$15.75M

That'd be over $30 mil we'd be taking on... which I just can't see Hendry doing with the ownership situation in flux. We could get the Blue Jays to pick up some of the tab, but it'd cost us even more than it already would in talent.

Vitters, Ceda, Pie, Hill, Cedeno, and maybe even some guy like Rundle for Halladay + 7 mil?

Part of the reason for including Marquis in the deal is salary. He's owned 7 million next season still, and what...3.5 million still this season?

Wellington Castillo would HAVE to be in this deal imo. giving a prospect package of- Vitters, Ceda, Castillo, M. Smith/Rundle/Colvin, combined with a MLB ready package of- Marquis, Pie, Hill, Cedeno, Marshall would maybe get the convo. started....

is it all legal to give toronto any prospect they want plus an under-the-table check for 1 billion dollars for roy halladay?

if we got halladay, it just wouldn't be fair.

You have to wonder how much new ownership would really impact Hendry making a move like this. So what if they didn't want the additional $30 mil from Halladay on the books? Then they order Hendry to shed salary. It's not like $30 mil over the next two years is going to make anyone flinch at Halladay. He could trade him after the season and restock the farm if necessary. The only real risk is if he gets hurt. Even then, I'm sure the contract is insured. If Hendry can make a deal like this, it should be done at all costs.

Wow. Don't see that happening, but that would be awesome. I wonder if that would be enough, though. From the Blue Jays standpoint, do they have much incentive to trade him? He's under contract through 2010 for what seems to be pretty manageable salary. On the other hand, he is 31 years old, so maybe trading him now would net them the biggest return, as increasing age and decreasing time left on his contract might make him less appealing later on. I would think they'd try to squeeze a little more value out of whomever they trade him to, but that's just my guess.

Could you imagine a trade like that being made, though? That would leave the Cubs with a rotation of Zambrano, Harden, Halladay, Dempster, and Lilly for this year, with Hill possibly replacing Dempster next year.

I know I say this every trade thread, but it will not take 5-7 players to get anyone

Dan Haren cost 6 players...

I beg to differ. Roy is definately worth 5-7 players HANDS DOWN.

Ted Lilly would be a much more logical choice for a salary-balancer. He's got 2/$24M left after this season, so the margin between that and what Halladay's owed is only around $6M total.

Not sure if Lilly left Toronto on good terms or not.

Anyway, start with Lilly and Cedeno for Halladay and Eckstein, and then start piling on the young guys.
