sweet, so he will be ready to join the bullpen in a month or so right?

I highly doubt he'll be on the team this year.

I'll keep saying it till I go blue, I hope he starts.

I respectfully disagree. His numers as a closer are much better than a starter. His velocity spiked as a closer, and proved he didn't have what it takes to be a starter in college. I would like to see the cubs mold him in the papelbon kinda way and I think he definately has what it takes.

Woo.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have signed first-round draft pick Andrew Cashner for a $1.53 million bonus.

Cashner, a 6-foot-5-inch closer from TCU, is expected to throw at Wrigley Field by the end of the week and then report to the Cubs Rookie League team in Mesa.

Papelbon was a starter in the minors (after being a closer in college). Whether he ends up a reliever in the big leagues, he needs to start to get the innings to work on his offspeed pitch. And we don't know if his velocity spiked just because of the shorter innings or if also because he filled in/got stronger (he was 5'9" when he graduated HS, now 6'6"). Starting to work on his secondary stuff would be a great way to at least see if the improved stuff was just due to relieving or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong Raisin, but IIRC Isn't Cashner's slider said to be very very good, if not already major league ready? Starting his career in the rotation of a minor league team might be a good idea, but if his fastball and slider are already major league ready, and don't have much room for improvement, then I think the Pen is just fine for now.

It's a plus pitch when its on but he's not consistent with it and has command issues with it (and it sounds like its a new addition that replaced his curve when he was in JC). Some of the draft day scouting reports made it seem like he needs more work on it for it to be big league ready.

Local Houston paper expects Cashner to head to Boise after his stop in Mesa:

After that, Cashner is expected to ship out to the Cubs’ facility in Mesa, Ariz., for a couple of weeks of workouts before joining the Boise (Idaho) Hawks of the rookie Northwest League.

If they're really pitching him out of the pen there, you'd have to assume it's gonna be a pretty short stay in Boise.

I'll be shocked if he gets up to AAA this year. He'd have to be super impressive to do so (and thus possibly help the big league squad), imo. I would think the Cubs would try to be conservative with him since he's already logged a college season this year.

Bonus can't be too far off from slot.

With cal, I assume he'll take a while at Mesa to get in shape, then be in Boise for a while, and it will be well into August before he cameo's in full-season. Unless he's like untouchable, I'd be surprised if he appears above A-ball this summer. There's lots of time ahead in his career. But there's only so many more weeks of minor-league season left. I don't expect too much this season.
