Jul 9 Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, reports the Toronto Blue Jays offered SP A.J. Burnett for Milwaukee Brewers SS J.J. Hardy, according to a major-league source.

that is exactly what it says on hardy's player notes placard

how come i didn't see this anywhere else?

do you think they will do it?

should we do it?

i think his contract is the major problem with this acquisition...

I would give up prospects to do it. This year's rotation:

Z, Harden, Burnett, Dempster, Lilly.

Next year's rotation:

Z, Harden, Burnett, Lilly, Marshall

We don't resign Eyre, Howry and Dempster and we should have enough to keep this guy on the roster. Btw, Eyre and Howry should not be resigned period. Howry isn't the same and Eyre is a POS. We have Ascanio, Cotts, Wuertz and Gaudin to take their spots next year in the pen.

yeah, but they want a shortstop, and we only have two

theriot and cedeno

i don't think we can get him

Hardy for Burnett would be fantastic for us.

why sir?

Because even if Burnett was great for them, the downgrade to Escobar from Hardy would wipe away pretty much all of those gains. If Burnett continues to struggle, the Brewers easily make themselves worse. Plus Burnett would stick them with that contract in all likelihood, meaning there's zero chance of Sabathia or Sheets staying there if there was any before.

Burnett & Eckstein for Cedeno, Marquis & prospect.

they did just lose mcgowen...

poor toronto...i really do feel bad for them

The Pirates current attitude is that the draft picks we'd get for losing Marte to free agency are worth much more than anything offered for him so far.

As for the question of who'd close until Capps gets back, it'd probably be Tyler Yates.

With Milwaukee's defense Burnett would continue to pitch much worse than his FIP. Watching Escobar hit 160 at the big league level would be fun too.

that's certainly something to take into account, because marte is probably a type A free agent. i'd think that marte could bring a pretty nice prospect back, especially since everyone is looking for a LOOGY at the deadline, but if not, just hang onto him and take the two picks.

No one's going to give up their first unprotected pick for Marte... this is going to be like one of those Tony Graffanino/Todd Walker/Michael Barrett situations.

Why aren't we discussing more about getting him. I feel the only real move we need to make is a get another left handed set-up man. So Fuentes/Marte/Mahay should be our main priorities, but have they really said any rumors about them? just curious

I don't understand this position. If anything, we need help from the right side.

Wood has been great, but he has a blister right now. Plus, he's still Kerry Wood. Who's to say that he won't break down?

Right now, Marmol is one of the worst pitchers in baseball.

Howry is Howry.

Wuertz has been sent down in favor of Kevin Hart. Let's reflect for a moment on the magnitude of that sentence.

Lieber has entered witness protection.

Ha OK you got a point, but from the left side we all know that Cotts sucks and will in the long run. Eyre is good, but is on the DL and we need someone to fill in for him. I really think it's all in Marmol's head right now. He hopefully will bounce back!

Veal or Samardzija for Marte?

Samardzija has a FULL NTC, and I doubt he'll waive it for Pittsburgh. Veal seems to be fair value for Marte, but I would have to be talked into the deal.

The Brewers still have a lot of good young player depth in their minor league system, correct? I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a couple of trades to pick up a reliever or two.

Yes, they have plenty of depth to make a deal. My feeling is they will want to hold onto Gamel, but they could still trade Salome, Escobar, Gillespie, Brantley, and others.

It would be kind of funny if Beane traded Street to the Brewers. Not ha ha funny but funny.
