2010-2012 or so, I'd rather have Theriot.

Jeter is currently signed through 2010. It will be interesting if contract talks heat up starting this offseason. I wonder how he'd handle going into 2010 with an expiring contract.

He'll be 37 in 2011 and if his skills have diminished as much as people think, I'd have to think he would contemplate retirement.

Possibly. But 20 years of having the entire NY metropolitan area blow smoke up your butt could make it difficult for a man to walk away. And he's not going to be banging every 24 year old celebrity when he's an unemployed former ballplayer.

Guys who just wrapped up a 200 million dollar contract aren't called "unemployed." They're called "retired."

And yes, I'm jealous.

Yes, but he won't be relevant, at least not enough for the hottet celebrities to spend their time with him.

it pains me to say, but Theriot mostly for $$$. the difference in production going forward probably isn't significant enough to offset that salary especially when that same money could be used to add another legit #1 starter

Jeter and its not particularly close. Just look at the RC. It's almost laughable.

Theriot 2008 RC/G: 5.2

Jeter 2008 RC/G: 4.4

Not even close. You cannot look at a half of a year's worth of data. Look at the runs created for their career each year. Jeter got off to a terrible start this year.

The question was who would you rather have this season, and who would you rather from next season until the end of their careers.

I'm not sure what information you're looking at to back up that Jeter is the answer to both parts of the question, and that the difference between him and Theriot is "laughable" and "not even close." Theriot has performed noticably better this year offensively, is a superior defender, and is 5 years younger than Jeter who has shown a clear decline in his performance over the past three years.

I'll take Theriot this season and for the future no money angle included. You look simply at the numbers and Theriot is already better than Jeter and that gap will only widen in the coming years. In a year or two there could be a big issue with jeter. He will be so bad at SS defensively that no team will play him there yet has never learned to play another position. He is no longer a good enough hitter to use as your exclusive DH so where does he go. It's either he learns 2b or he learns to be content with retirement in my eyes. Theriot isn't good at defense but has shown he can play 2b already which is easier defensively so when he slips you can move him over. Jeter is a good leader but that really doesn't hold too much weight. Players all adults and only go so far with leadership plus it's not like Theriot is going to be any kind of problem player.

Jeter used to be a great player but used to holds no weight in this kind of discussion. In regard to the person who said how long can someone be overrated when every thinks he is. Well when you get MVP votes with the kind of season he had last year you will keep that overrated title.

I'd rather have Theriot for a very good reason. I'd like A-Rod and Jeter to still be teammates after C-Rod's prenuptial divorce goes through, because I can totally see Jeter adding C-Rod to his list of accomplishments, if you know what I mean. It will create a really fun human interest story.
