It's no surprise that the Blue Jays are shopping right-hander A.J. Burnett.

But what they're looking for in return certainly is.

The Jays are looking to obtain a shortstop in talks with other teams.

The Jays have had trade talks with a number of teams regarding Burnett, who is in the third year of a five-year, $55-million US contract. Burnett can opt out at the end of the season and become a free agent. He is owed $12 million in each of the final two years of his contract.

Philadelphia Phillies scout Charlie Kerfeld saw Burnett's start at Miller Park against the Milwaukee Brewers and former Jays scout Ted Lekus, now with the Baltimore Orioles, saw Burnett beat the Atlanta Braves last Sunday at Rogers Centre.

"They're offering Burnett to any team that needs pitching," said an American League general manager. "They've told us they're not happy with either David Eckstein or John McDonald."

Blue Jays, meet Ronny Cedeno.

How funny would it be if we got David Eckstein another beloved Cardinal. Perhaps even funnier is we would have the two grittiest white players in the history of baseball. Alas I doubt we would care to get Eckstein in trade (I don't really either).

Somehow, I don't think Cedeno would interest them.

If a SS is what they want, I could see Burnett to the Braves for Brent Lillibridge, Burnett to the Brewers for Alcides Escobar, or Burnett to the Dodgers for Hu.

I don't think the Braves have much interest in that contract. I don't think anyone has that much interest in Hu. And the Brewers are setting their sights higher, but if CC doesn't go, the Jays would take Escobar for Burnett in a heartbeat.

Theriot, Marshall, Murton+prospects for Burnett+Eckstein?

Talk about trading to stay right where you already are, at best.

Heeeeeck no. Eckstein is not very close to Theriot right now and is 5 years or so older. Burnett isn't a huge improvement over Marshall just big. Plus that trade pretty much kills us from trading for anyone else of any caliber.

If the Brewers really are as close to Sabathia as they think, we will need something to counter. Rich Harden would be ieal, but with the A's in contention, theres no reason for them to move him. Burnett is the next best option, and if taking Eckstein off their hands is the way to get him, so be it. While hes a career .700 OPSer, we could do a lot worse at the 8 spot in our lineup.

Frankly, I don't think Escobar is much more valuable than Cedeno. Everything about Escobar's numbers are driven by a high batting average and his patience at the plate is rather atrocious. He's not ready and he probably will never be productive at the major league level until he learns how to draw walks.

Lillibridge could be an interesting player down the line, but he's not much younger than Cedeno and has far less ML experience than Cedeno. Plus, there's not a whole lot of power there.

Neither of those guys are much better than Cedeno, quite frankly. If you think either of them could get it done, but Cedeno can't, I'd like to hear your reasoning.

We could do worse but right now we have better in Theriot so why f-it up. Plus it seems to me the team is very very close and Theriot is one of the better liked guys so you risk the chemistry issue as well. And this is all without mention that Burnett and Eckstein both get paid much much more than the others meaning whoever our owner is next offseason whether the same or new will be less inclined to sign a big FA.

Lillibridge has a .546 OPS in AAA, there's no way he's headlining a deal for Burnett.

Escobar is all singles too, no walks or XBH. Errors are a crappy evaluator, but again, 16 errors in 82 games this year, 99 in 405 games career. Cedeno has more success at a higher level at a similar age with better peripherals.

Thank you!

I seriously do not get why people are fellating Escobar the way they have been. It's not to say that he's a bad prospect or anything, but I do not think the guy will end up being a top-flight SS when all is said and done. I just don't see it.

It wouldnt be for the sake of getting Eckstein and moving Theriot, it would be for getting Burnett, and they want to move Eck. Sometims you need to give something to get something. You cant always give up Alex Gonzalez, Francis Beltran, Bobby Hill, and Jose Hernandez and get Aramis Ramirez and Nomar Garciapara.

I don't think Toronto is going to want nearly as much as people believe. I think they just wanna dump the contract, I think Ronny for Burnett might actually get it done.

If The Cubs are willing to take on the full salary for the last 2.5 years of his deal, we could probably get him pretty cheap, maybe for Ronny and Murton or Hoffpauir.

I'm banking on Burnett opting out. I think Toronto's afraid he won't and they'll be "stuck" with his contract. I also think JP Ricciardi is kind of a moron.

Burnett's gonna be gone, and probably for cheap to anyone who wants that contract, but it won't be as little as Cedeno and Murton. Cedeno doesn't have a whole lot of value, so I'm guessing it will take 1 solid prospect and possibly some filler.

I'd offer Cedeno, Ceda and Craig.
