after failing to steal a win against Michigan and Wisconsin, Penn State is hitting a rough final stretch here and could play their way straight into the NIT, so I'll take any injury advantage I can get. they're staring squarely into the face of a 7-11 or 8-10 final conf. record, which is a few games short of what I was hoping for

you'd almost think illinois was good this year or something

almost

they have very few passable players. that will change soon, though.

My God I can't wait until all of those guys actually get there so we don't have to hear about the next 3 years and all of the studs you'll have every week.

For like the last 2-3 years all Illinois fans talk about are guys who aren't even playing on the team. It was nothing but E.J. for how long, then last year and in the off season we heard about what a stud Legion was (that's turning out well) and how unstoppable you would be once you had him, young Derron Williams, Paul, Richardson, etc.

I eagerly await the Illini reign of dominance just so you will actually discuss the present and not end every argument with "but we've got studs on the way." I feel like I'm in a warped discussion of the future of the Cubs with our farm system in 2002.

You guys could be excited for the future as well. If you had any talent coming in.

That and I love how a ranked team in the top 20 isn't at all relevant this year.

Great point! Now show me where I said your team wasn't at all relevant this year.

And wait, you actually have guys to be excited about? How is that possible? You ranted like a lunatic for 4 years that your coach was the worst recruiter in history and should be fired? Excellent prognostications indeed.

You were eagerly awaiting us to discuss the present. Here you go, we should make the tournament this year. Being a team in Illinois you should. We have a ton of talent in our backyard to choose from. That's why we are a bubble type team, if Weber would have recruited well we would not be a bubble team. In the future he has recruited well, thus we will be better. Are you understanding that line of thinking?

So yes I do think that Weber crapped the bed in recruiting the last few years. That's why we have Trent Meacham, a walk on, starting. On one of Self or Kruger's teams he might have played 5 minutes here or there as a zone buster. Sorry for expecting my coach to bring in the best the state has to offer every year and wanting to be competitive year in year out.

You probably won't hear anything until gametime. Get used to that for most likely the remainder of the season, unfortunately.

Trent played 18 minutes/game for a pretty good mid-major as a freshman. Don't be ridiculous.

Yeah you are right. But, let's say we landed Sherron Collins. How many minutes is Trent playing for us? In the late 90s early 2000's we were landing Sheron Collins. Now we aren't. Now Trent's a starter.

Sherron Collins was a 5 star player in the CPL. When did Illinois ever land that type of recruit outside of the Henson era?

The teams of the early millennium were stacked with players from downstate, and the talent downstate at the time was unbelievable. Chicago recruiting is a completely different beast, and Illinois was incredibly lucky to have that sort of talent south of I-80 during that era.

We were probably lucky that Kruger left when he did.

Why is that?

Perception was he didn't like recruiting. He was never going to recruit well in Chicago what with the CPL being pissed about us not hiring Jimmy Collins. But, what people tend to forget is he recruited better at Illinois than Self did. Granted that was because of the downstate talent in that time period.

Dee wasn't CPL but he was a 5 star from Chicago. Also if you think that Self would have missed on Collins if he was still at the UofI then your nuts. Even then there are a lot of guys that we could have got that would be playing over Trent that were not 5 star cpl guys. Pargo, Dentmon, etc. We also could have got Evan Turner.

My point sitll is Meacham isn't the type of talent that has been starting for Illinois during Self or Kruger's eras. Barring the one year that Kruger had Frankie Williams ruled inelligible

Self may not have missed, but I am not convinced it would have been completely legal either.

Well as is evident by our what, 30 some self reported infractions, I think he was cheating as it was anyways. Just not to a level to get us in big trouble.

Ugh and after playing 7 minutes Saturday, Cyrus Tate is out tonight against Wisconsin.

Penn State could be looking at a serious tailspin. In about 20 minutes they'll be 6-6. They then have Minnesota at home, @ Illinois, @ Ohio State, IU at home, Illinois at home and @ Iowa.

If they don't get Minnesota they're probably looking at 6 straight losses. They'll get IU but I see a split at best in the last two games. From 17-5, 6-3 to a very possible 19-12, 8-10 and an NIT bid.

PSU had a weak nonconference too, so they need a 4-2 finish or a run to the finals of the BTT to get to the bubble. It's still possible(hold serve at home, win @ Iowa), but they're probably 7th in the pecking order about even with Michigan and the Big Ten would be extremely fortunate to get 7 bids.

colorado has 9 points at half against Iowa State.

same colorado that pushed us to the buzzer

i don't trust OU at all this year

this 3 game losing streak was a time when they HAD to win one of the three, but failed. Teams have figured out how to defense them now, and they're struggling for open looks. I can't see going 4-2 when the final schedule has MIN, 2xILL, OSU, IWA and IU

So Iowa was down 3 with the ball and less than a minute to go. Turnover. Wisconsin scores. Okay we're down 5 with the ball, 30 seconds to go and chance to get last bucket and down to one possession.

Kelly turns it over leading to a layup from Hughes. Gatens pushes Landry after the bucket and deservedly gets a T. Bohannon hits both free throws then they get the ball and he hits a 3 at the buzzer. A 7 point play off the turnover and we're down 12 instead of 2-5 at half.

The same Colorado ISU lost to a few weeks ago. Hopefully this carries over and they can steal a few more conference wins. It was nice not having to worry in the 2nd half for once.
