while talking to an Illinois fan, I had to hear how dirty, rotten of a program Indiana is. Anyway, I am sure that I have read somewhere that Illinois has been put on probation more than any other school in NCAA history. So I tried googling this and could find no history of these types of things. Am I wrong about this and does someone know where I could find a history of schools on probation.

Illinois has been on probation 3 times to my knowledge, twice for football (late 80's, 2004ish) and once for basketball (mid-90s).

You can fault Bob Knight (err, I mean Coach Knight) for a lot of things, but running a clean program was always priority #1. Kelvin Sampson, however, is in himself a dirty program.

they also had a huge scandal in the 60s that put both FB and BB on probation. I am not trying to validate Indiana, just pointing out that Illinois has had a pretty shaky history and has no room to trash other programs.

i don't think you'll get any grief over today's iu program. however, sampson was a scumbag who blatantly cheated, got caught and then got fired, reluctantly by the school so they could lessen any punishment the ncaa might impose upon them. he did this at oklahoma and was still hired, apparently because iu had had such a hard time at locking down the state in terms of recruiting. he was essentially hired to get ej gordon and pick up the recruiting by any means necessary and he was doing an excellent job of it. if iu wasn't so afraid of being hammered with sanctions, they would have never gotten rid of him. i'm sure that they weighed the reality of losing ebanks against the sting of probation before they fired him, it must have been a very difficult decision for them, and i'm absolutely sure that it was.

I just looked up and saw 19-14 to start the SECOND HALF of the Duke-FSU game. What?

Yea, the lowest point total for Duke all season in the first half had been 29. It had been 17 for FSU.

First time in shot clock era that a team lead at halftime with only one player (Gerald Henderson) making a field goal? Henderson looked really good for the first time all season and got a career high of 25 points.

Greg Paulus only played 6 minutes all game and isn't particularly hurt. It's disappointing as Smith sat out for 11 minutes, so Scheyer was effectively the backup point guard. I don't like Paulus' benching because he can shoot so well that we'll need him at some point this season, but I am glad Smith, Scheyer, and Henderson are all playing great defense.

Elliot Williams is the best perimeter defender I have seen at Duke in a long time, but he has absolutely no offensive game.

PSU plays Minnesota tomorrow. Are the Gophers as good as their record indicates?

No.

I figured. Then again, PSU isn't as good as their record either

usually in early january most teams aren't as good as their record, because they've spent much of their OOC schedule beating up on cream puffs. penn state's best win was over a mediocre ga tech team.

still they have done fine in the big ten schedule so far. northwestern at home was a game they "should" win and wisconsin on the road was a game they "should" lose. winning at home against purdue is a solid win - they'll get their act together and be a top 40 rpi team. wiinning at minnesota would be a nice win. then they have a tough but winnable game (home vs mich st) and three games they "should" win (@indiana, vs michigan, vs iowa) before the auto-loss (@mich st).

holy cross began their "real" season today - conference play in the wretched patriot league. we beat lafayette at home; they're terrible. actually there are only two or three teams that aren't downright bad, so if we can get healthy (we've had as many as 5 players hurt for games in the OOC schedule) we will have a chance to win the league.

Ball State won their MAC opener today at Eastern Michigan. I wouldn't even be mentioning it except that the final was 46-42. Yeah, the MAC's not good.

Umm, Cal beat U-Dub 88-85 in triple OT after Cal scored 5 points (all FTs) in the last 14 seconds of the second OT to force the third OT.

Was it all FT's? I was following this one on Gamecast, and they had it as a putback off a missed 3 and the foul with 1 second left in the second OT. They finished the 3 point play to tie the game.

yeah, gotta say I didn't see the Hogs going 2-18 on threes. and what do you know, Varnado has 5 blocks. Dude is just ridiculous. Washington came with 18 and 15, but Fortson has been...not good. Can't buy a bucket, and not doing the other things like he normally does. Team overall has played like..well, a team full of freshmen.

I wasn't watching, just reading a post on a different board about the game. Not sure how accurate that poster is so I'd guess you're right. Either way, a horrible way to lose for Washington.

I guess Mike Brey got a little prickly in the postgame press conference because he perceives Harangody as not getting adequate national player of the year consideration.

"You know what pisses me off? He's considered a second-tier candidate. How the hell is that possible?"

I'm not sure to what degree I agree with him, though he's probably referring somewhat rightfully to the general opinion that Hansbrough and Stephen Curry are the generally agreed-upon two-man race.

It doesn't matter anyways, Psycho T is winning this again. They outta have an asterick for the studs who were screwed out of this award by the media's love for Pscho T. Michael Beasley not winning last year is just awesome. Yeah you were hands down better than the kid were going to give it to, but oh well.

At least Tebow's team wins their last game each year. Note I didn't say the national championsip as it really doesn't exist in college football.

yay tyler hansbrough hate.

the only four athletes I cannot stand at this point are tyler hansbrough, tim tebow, jake delhomme, and brett favre.

There is no way Hansbrough wins player of the year, this year.

What he's breaking records left and right. He won it over Beasley and there is no one that can sniff Beasley in college this year. I would be shocked if he doesn't win it.

Dont worry, in 10 yrs when Beasley is still a good NBA player, only Jay Bilas is going to remember that N Carolina's radio color guy was National Player of the year in 2008.
