i don't mind patterson being called up (i would have prefered Murton), but having both patterson and fontenot on the 25 seems redundant. Edited by soapy

My only disappointment would be that their rationale was probably something like, Patterson has leadoff ability and speed, and that's what we need to fill Soriano's shoes.

oh i'm quite certain that he was called because; a) he's a "lead-off" hitter; and b) he's left-handed.

LOL Patterson would have been my last guess behind Murton and Pie but hey, this is the Cubs.

Well Pie is raking with a .557 OPS and Murton's just crushing the ball with .084 IsoP, so I can see why they're clearly better choices.

I'm pretty indifferent between Murton and Patterson. Murton adds a little more OBP but absolutely zero power and can only play LF. Patterson has been hot and is driving the ball well while adding more versatility and some speed.

So I'm guessing Hart was sent down to make room on the roster for EPatt with Hoff taking Soriano's spot.

50 points of OBP is a lot. And we're missing our LF, so "can only play LF" isn't really a detriment. In addition, Patterson's versatility is useless on a team with 2 SS and 4 second basemen and 2 CF. We don't need another guy that can play any of those positions. The fact that he's LH and a "leadoff hitter" is probably all that matter to Hendry and Lou.

ETA: Apparently EPatt can play LF too. Jeepers.

Murton can't hit the ball out of the infield in Triple A. Why does he deserve to come up?

He has around a .950 OPS against lefties. It wouldn't be bad if he platooned in LF with Hoffpauir.

I definitely don't mind the Patterson call-up though.

Well it is clear now why they called up Patterson since he is in LF today and leading off. I really wish this team wasn't so obsessed with this leadoff hitter nonsense. I was hoping that they would stick Hoffpauir in the lineup to give Lou the lefty power bat to protect Aramis so Fukudome could finally hit leadoff.

I thought we'd give Pie his opportunity here. Even Murton.

Well, I guess not.

I don't think Pie was ever in the discussion, nor do I necessarily think he should have been. The kid's been a mess since the demotion. It's hard to call people up when they are worthless in AAA.

Murton can't hit the ball out of the infield in Triple A. Why does he deserve to come up?

You are not allowed to speak such ills. Rhetoric only please when discussing the blatantly abused Pie and Murton. It's not like Patterson is going to play LF or anything and lead-off, thereby filling the exact role as Soriano. Oh wait.

Except there is no need for a leadoff role and Murton actually is a LF and Patterson is not.
