Basically saying that Hendry WILL go after and get a frontline starting pitcher at the deadline to "slot in after Zambrano and dominate."

Boers chimes in, "Well, that's if Cleveland stays where they are, right?" (paraphrasing)

Stone went, "It could be the big boy from the Indians..." but that regardless, he seemed pretty sure of the fact that Hendry will go this route and has what "a lot of Major League teams want" - major league ready young pitching (and hitting, for that matter).

Bernstein went on to make the same joke made here about needing a bigger post game spread. lulz

I'm not sure if he's basing that on any info he may have or if he's just logically coming to that conclusion, but again, he seemed very certain of it.

It'll take more then Pie and Hill to net CC, and quite honestly I don't see the Indians dealing. They have a chance to get to the playoffs with Him and zero chance without him.

Come 7/31, we and they'll probably have a much better idea what chance they actually have at a playoff spot.

Stone's proclamation doesn't increase the likelihood whatsoever in my opinion. He likes to guarantee a lot of things.

Let's see what June and July brings. If Lilly settles down and Hill returns, we might not have any interest in pitching. And if a bat gets hurt and/or somebody slows down, the lineup may be a more pressing need.

Then again, if Lou kills Marmol, Hendry might spend the deadline looking for relief help.

Can Brian Roberts be a frontline starter? Adam Dunn?

I am not used to needing pitching (or at least being set with offense)

Do you honestly see anyone else running away with that division? Cleveland bound to make a run sometime this year.

Didn't Stone promise us Roberts, too? Stone has no credibility on this sort of thing.

We're going to want another good starting pitcher, but so will a dozen other teams.

If there were any semblance of logic in the O's front office, we would have Roberts. Can't really blame Stone for not foreseeing that kind of stupidity. Big mistake by them.

Anyway, Hendry has a history of getting major deals done when the Cubs are legit contenders at the deadline (last year notwithstanding). With the Cubs on the cusp of a possible championship season, I could see him giving up whatever it takes (if he has enough, that is) to attempt to secure that championship.

We'll see.

Yep. If there is a deal Hendry will get it done.

What I think right now is completely inconsequential when the trade deadline actually comes up.

Yeah, I really wouldn't miss Pie (or Hill for that matter) if it nets us Sabathia. It would probably take more to get him, but I'd do almost anything to land him.

The Indians have one of the worst offenses in all of baseball. Sabathia's a free agent after this year. I really don't think it's very likely that the Indians will re-sign Sabathia after the season. So would they take the compensatory pick or would they trade him for several players that have a chance to make an impact on the team in the very near future?

A 1-2 punch with Zambrano and Sabathia with Dempster as the 3rd wheel would be a very nice commodity.

Possibly. Hendry has never been in a position where he was overwhelmingly ahead of a playoff spot, which is where he would be if the Cubs kept winning at a decent clip. I could easily see Hendry being content with a team that is playing at a 103 win pace and assume that if its good enough to win in the regular season, its good enough to win in October, which we all know its not.

I don't. Lou's going to push hard for another starter. And Hendry is all about continually improving the team. Hell, this could be his last year - he has something to prove.

I have to take issue with the bolded. It's good enough to win now, and it's good enough to win in October, especially if we have home field advantage.

Adding a pitcher would just further improve those chances.

Personally I dont see the Indians being in a selling position by then. More then likely, Hendry will end up going after AJ Burnett.

That'll work. Although the Jays are only 5 games out and Boston just lost Ortiz for a month.

Like I said in the other Sabathia thread, I don't see why it would take more than Pie and Hill. That's more than the Twins got for Santana. And it's not like the Indians would be in good negotiating position; any team that wants him could just sign him after the season anyway.

Now we just need to figure out who the other frontline starters that might be available are. Joe Blanton seems like a guy Hendry would love.

Ehhh...I don't know. It could win. I just can't see us matching up against Webb and Haren four times in a possible 5 game series with Zambrano, Lilly and Dempster. The Cubs face a pitcher the caliber of Webb or Haren maybe twice a month in the regular season. In the playoffs, they will be facing them much more frequently. Not to steal a stereotype (especially one that has been proven wrong on a few occasions), but pitching wins in October.

I'm not discrediting the fact that the Cubs could win as currently assembled, but at this point, I wouldn't put us as the unanimous favorites in the NL. We're right up there, but I think the DBacks, despite their slippage, and the Phillies are still right up there. At this point we basically have to hope that we are the hottest team coming into October.

You're consistently quite pessimistic, UMFan. I mean, we're all Cubs fans, so pessimism is natural. But to just outright dismiss the Cubs chances in October as you have is a bit ridiculous considering their play so far and the talent on the roster.

I wouldn't be opposed to that either.

And they have Marcum/McGowan/Litsch all developing. And I believe that Toronto wouldn't mind from getting AJ's contract off the books, and reinvest that money into acquiring another bat.

He's just being realistic. We need another starter if we want to go deep into October.

Do we really want to put our hopes in AJ Burnett? He's as much of an injury lock as there is in the game. He'll probably make 20+ starts, but it's pretty reasonable to think he wouldn't make it into October. He's not having a very good year to boot.
