Given that Tennessee is playing at West Tenn, hopefully we hear from an old friend or two from around those parts over the next five days. :D

Anything you can tell us about the notable Cubs prospects at Tennessee that you saw would be most welcome!

I know one thing.. the Jaxx cannot afford to lose more than twice in this series. I would like to take 4-5 from the Smokies and win the division. It will be tough and I fully expect the Smokies to be alot better than our first meeting in late April.

Arizona Phil - Hernandez Free at Last, Niko Knocks a Nookie:

  • Mark Pawelek threw 3 shutout innings.
  • Robert Hernandez is headed to back Peoria.
  • 19-year old RHP Eduardo Figueroa was demoted to the Venezuelan Academy.
  • Josh Vitters was healthy enough to swing the bat today - he went 0/1 with a K and 3 walks - the walks came on two 3-2 counts and one 3-1 count.
  • Ryan Acosta is only doing limited activity, indicating he might be hurt.
  • Oneri and 12 Cubs scouts worked out 3B Brett Lawrie (Langley, B.C.) and SS Niko Vasquez (Las Vegas, NV). Vasquez got in the extended spring training game and his a monster HR.

Fascinating.

Niko Vasquez

Seems like he could be an option in the second round.

I asked AZ Phil more about Acosta:

Everybody is real hush-hush about Ryan Acosta. Some claim to have never even heard of the guy.

I can tell you that he has not pitched in an EXST game since being demoted from Peoria, but I don't know exactly why not. I don't think he's hurt, though. At least not the typical elbow or shoulder thing. But I refuse to speculate beyond that.

Dae-Eun Rhee goes 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 K/0 BB, 38 pitches. Lifted after 2 because of his pitch count. Probably could have taken a stab at the third if not for a throwing error that led to about 10 more pitches in the 2nd.

Another walk for Tyler Colvin (22 on the season now). Veal: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.

Mark Reed: 73 AB - .329/.430/.452/.882 - 13 BB, 18 K. He went 3/4 with a homer today.

FANTASTIC outing for Alberto Cabrera. 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. :D

Veal seems to be really turning his season around.

What is the projection on Reed? I remember when he was drafted there was hype around his brother and how Mark was a Catcher.... Isn't this his first solid season?

At this point, Mark is basically a nonprospect/organizationfiller, until proven otherwise.

Veal went a perfect 8th inning too. Believe that's the longest outing in the Cubs minors this year. He struck out another in the 8th.

Which is what he's done thus far this season. An .882 OPS in the pitcher-friendly FSL is great (yes, only in 73 AB) and he's still 22.

That's good to see he showed some power in EXST, his power is his biggest question (since his lack of speed has been confirmed).

Plus, catchers typically have a longer development curve compared to other prospects. If he finishes the season with those kinds of numbers, he's back on the radar as a legitimate prospect in this system.
