In related and not-so coincedental news, the Iowa Cubs led 2-0 after 3 innings. Gave up 2 in the bottom of the 9th. Got a leadoff single from Eric Patterson, a balk to get him to 2nd, and then Felix Pie popped out to 3B. EPatt then stole 3rd, but was thrown out at the plate as Murton could not get the ball past a drawn in IF. Murton goes to 2nd on a wild pitch, Kroeger strikes out to end the inning.

our pitching is dismal.....despite our ERA rankings....our pitchers arent very good.

The back end of our rotation is mediocre. The rest of our pitching is stellar.

We have a #1 pitcher.....and four #5's..........Dempster and Lilly are #3's at best, and this season Dempster is overachieving, while Lilly isn't looking so good....I don't trust EITHER in the playoffs.

You even contradicted yourself with your own sentence.

I may have worded it wrong.....on their best day Lilly and Dempster are #3's.....but in reality, our entire staff is comprised of #5 pitchers.....with the exception of Zambrano.

You are wrong, and you aren't even in the same state as correct. Ted Lilly has put up an ERA+ above 100 in five of the last six seasons, usually over 115. That isn't a No. 3 starter in any way, shape, or form.

The rotation is a concern without Hill, but let's not hysterically overstate.

Even with Hill our rotation still isn't great, but easily good enough to win the division. Zambrano, Hill, Lilly is a good front 3.

Ok Ok....I will admit im overreacting and REALLY irritated with the fact that we just lost 2/3 to Houston........forgive me

I'll be there if the Cubs lose this one. We have one more inning to go, the middle of the order due up, and a crotchety and crazed umpire behind the dish. The 9th could turn out well for us.

But if they lose, I'll be annoyed.

How Cub-like.

Haven't we only won 1 road series this year? (Swept Pirates)

To add insult to injury, is ANYONE else upset that Ricky Nolasco pretty much shut out the Dbacks going up against Branden Webb?

So once we come back down to earth at Wrigley, we're in some deep crap.

His numbers the past 2 years are comparable to Gallagher.

The following all came from the same game thread, names removed to protect the overreacting:

"SCORE SOME RUNS ON THIS BUM"

"Why is our offense kinda sucky tonight?"

"We're not seriously going to lose to Randy Wolf and the Padres are we?"

"Wait, the Padres are winning? That's impossible though, everybody was saying they are unable to score runs and this is an easy win with a Z vs. Wolf matchup. I'm confused."

"Zambrano always melts down against the worst hitters, often the pitchers

Ugh, can we please win a series against a bad team that isn't the pirates?"

"This reminds me of every Cubs game last season. They jump out to an early lead, but are quietly dominated by a mediocre lefty the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the other team chips away and eventually pulls ahead. The Cubs manage to stage a rally late in the game, but fail to score in the most excruciating way possible."

All these came in a game the Cubs won by 9 runs.

Or once we catch fire on the road we will really run away with things. You could look at it either way.

I'm certainly annoyed by our ability to break even or win on run differential but still lose series against divisional rivals.

But it's a long season and this is still the best team in the division, and it still isn't close. There are no guarantees this early in the season, but I'm happy with our 75% playoff odds.

This is the Cubs. Always expect the worst option, but hope for the best. It's less painful that way.
