screw that, if he's effective let him help the bullpen down the stretch. That's his future anyway.

my assumption is that a pitcher who never established himself as a major league pitcher will not be able to do so during his first year off of TJ surgery. hell, liriano was maybe the best pitcher in baseball for half a season, and he's pitched lousy this year.

Guzman's been a reliever in two consecutive seasons now(with about a half season's worth of work) with fine success.

Liriano is a starter, being able to recover the ability to dominate for 6-7 innings is quite different than being able to hit your spots for 1.

I said "if he's effective". If he struggles in his rehab, don't worry about him and let him have a go at the big league pen in '09.

Last year as a reliever in MLB:

15 IP, 15 H, 13/4 K/BB, 1 HR, .263/.317/.404/.721 line against (63 PA's)

He was almost exactly the same as a starter(also 15 IP).

well, i stand somewhat corrected, even though o like to see a lower baa.

Angel pitched in an intrasquad game per AZ Phil:

2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K/0 BB

Angel Guzman displayed good control in his outing today, throwing 20 strikes and only eight balls in his two innings of work (15 pitches in the 1st inning, and 13 pitches in the 2nd). He allowed one run on four hits (all singles), no walks, and two strikeouts (both swinging), and a 2/1 GO/FO (another runner was thrown out after over-running 2nd base).

It would have to be considered a huge win to get 2-3 decent seasons of relief work out of him after all his issues.

was guzman really even that good before he got hurt the last time? i'm not all that excited about the prospect of him joining the rotation later in the season.

Each time up he shows a spark then mediocrity. I hope he gets healthy so we can trade him before the deadline.

Wow, we agree on something, almost

AZ Phil says Angel Guzman expects to be at Fitch for 2-3 more weeks before moving up to start his rehab (this is to protect his remaining option for next season). He's definitely ready to head up, though.

Any word on his rehab? I know its only been a week, but I still am really pulling for him to be back before september.

Here's what AZ Phil said today (he also gives a better explanation on how the Cubs are going about saving Angel's option year):

AZ Phil: What's the latest on Angel Guzman? Is he close to a rehab assignment yet? Thanks.

===========================

TIMMER: Angel Guzman probably could have gone out on a minor league rehab six weeks ago, but the Cubs are apparently waiting until at least July 14th.

If they start the rehab no earlier than July 14th, and if he spends the maximum 30 days on the rehab assignment, and then he spends no more than 19 days on optional assignment to the minors, and then gets recalled on September 1st, his 4th minor league option will be preserved for 2009.

If he were to begin his minor league rehab earlier than July 14th, it would mean the Cubs would have to add him to their 25-man roster prior to September 1st, or else Guzman will be out of minor league options in 2009.

And I suspect the Cubs want to keep that last minor league option in their pocket for next season, in case Gooz isn't ready coming out of Spring Training or in case the Cubs get caught in a roster numbers crunch.

Gooz could be the new Marmol toward the end of the season while the old Marmol gets some much needed rest. Then the old Marmol could be the new Marmol again during the playoffs and strike out everyone and not walk people. That would be good.

=D>

I like it. As long as we're fantasizing, my fave is Wood with a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 9th, game 7 of the NLCS vs Stl, after coming in to pitch the top half and striking out the side. That also would be good.

I'm sure some of you saw Gooz on yesterday's CSN broadcast.

Cubs.com"]Angel Guzman, a highly regarded pitcher in the Cubs system who underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery last year, will also throw a simulated game on Tuesday in Mesa. Guzman has been throwing on the side for nearly two months.

"Everything is good," Guzman said Monday.

Sun-Times"]Pitcher Angel Guzman -- the Cubs' fifth starter early last season -- visited teammates in the clubhouse and said his rehab from last year's Tommy John surgery is going well enough that he plans to start a minor-league rehab assignment within two weeks with an eye toward returning to the active roster by mid-August.

Gooz to start for Daytona today. :)

As a starter?

I'm assuming when all is said and done with his rehab, they see him back in the pen...

Certainly. Most all big league pitchers (starters or relievers) start on rehab assignments.
