Arizona Phil: Guzman Extends Pitch Count At Fitch Park

While the EXST Cubs were losing 8-3 to the EXST Giants this morning on Fitch Park Field #3, Angel Guzman continued his rehab from September 2007 TJ surgery, throwing 20 pitches in a "simulated game" on Field #2.

Facing five EXST Cubs who were not in the starting lineup on Field #3 (Junior Lake, George Matheus, Nelson Perez, Kevin Soto, and Josh Vitters), the 26-year old Guzman once again had good velocity (consistently throwing his fastball 92-94 MPH, same as last Thursday), but also once again struggled with his control, throwing ten balls and ten strikes in his one inning of work. But at least nobody hit the ball hard off him.

Would be nice to see him face off against another team in the extended spring training circuit (he's done simulated or intrasquad games only so far). I'm guessing that's the next step.

Guzman's control problems following his arm troubles are interesting and unfortunate given in his younger days, he had some of the best control in the system.

I'm assuming at this point he's unlikely to ever be a starter again, correct?

Probably, but not because of that. His control problems are to be expected, he hasn't thrown prior to his rehab began recently in about a year. It takes some time to regain control. His velocity and movement are more important at this stage of the game. The fact that he's hitting 50% strikes is an improvement (small sample size of course), and is good to see at this stage. If he can get to about 70% strikes after another 5 rehab outings, I'll be very pleased.

Most all pitchers go through a phase of poorer control post-Tommy John surgery (control tends to return to career norms after a season).

Angel will throw three great innings then trip over a bat walking to the dugout.

How old is he, in United States years not Dominican Republic years?

He's 26.

it's funny to me that this thread could be five years long

we are trying to beat the "Bruce Webber is the worst recruiter " thread over in the "rant" section.

And he's not even Dominican.

How old is that in Venezuelan years?

Sorry, I didn't meant to imply my two points were related. I was more just interested in whether his parade of arm injuries would preclude him from starting again (not related to the point about his control).

But I think we're on the same page.

It'd be great if he could make his way back to being a good starter, but I hope he's at least makes it as a reliever. Imagine Wood, Marmol, Guzman, Wuertz, Ascanio, Howry all in the bullpen at the end of the season.

However, I'd rather imagine a rotation of Zambrano, Hill, Marmol, Guzman, Gallagher for next year.

There are certain threads on this site that seem to go on forever. One of them is under the title I gave in the "rant" section.

Gooz threw a live BP session today. He topped out at 94 mph and had much better control this time out (13 strikes out of 20 pitches).

Angel Guzman threw a couple innings of a simulated game today, Oneri Fleita was watching:

Arizona Phil at the Cub Reporter[/url]"]Guzman was very sharp, throwing 94 MPH fastballs, nasty curves, and a first-class change-up to the tune of 22 strikes and only eight balls in his two innings of work. With EXST now over, Guzman could go out on a 30-day MLB DL rehab assignment to perhaps someplace like Daytona very soon.

Wow. That's fantastic news. I'd love to see him up on the big club as soon as he can get there.

So when could we realistically expect Guz to be ready for Major League action? August maybe?

I would think sooner than that if he's already being considered for a rehab. That can only be a 30 day deal, so they'll have to bring him up or send him to Iowa sometime in July.

Pitcher Angel Guzman threw from flat ground Friday in Arizona, and Randy Bush said "he looked really, really good." Guzman is recovering from right-elbow surgery

Good news. Depending on how our rotation looks in the 2nd half, maybe we'll give him a shot. I hope Hendry goes and gets a starter at the deadline, ridding Marquis of the rotation, but if he doesn't they should give Angel a start.
