Jesse Estrada, who was hit in the head by a line drive but is ok, heads to the DL to make room for Holliman at Tennessee:

Knoxville News-Sentinel"]Holliman Returns: The Chicago Cubs sent Mark Holliman, who pitched a no-hitter for Tennessee last season, from Class AAA Iowa to the Smokies.

The right-hander from Germantown who played at Ole Miss was 1-1 with a 5.16 earned-run average in five starts for Iowa.

Holliman is expected to join the rotation.

To create roster room for Holliman, reliever Jesse Estrada was placed on the disabled list. The right-hander was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Gil that was caught by second baseman Nate Spears in the eighth inning of the Smokies' 6-1 win at Chattanooga on Monday.

Estrada wasn't seriously hurt but will have time to recover.

Do we have ANY hitters doing worth a darn in our system right now?

I see a couple NRI types doing well in AAA (Torres and Blanco) and Jake Fox hitting for some good power.

Doug Deeds hitting well, but he's 26 in AA.

Daytona has some nice numbers, but the more legit prospects aren't hitting as well. Reed is hitting good so far, let's hope he's putting it together finally.

Not really any standouts at Peoria.

Let's hope some of these guys start getting hot.

Keep in mind the FSL is a pitcher's league, I think Wyatt and Wright are doing ok. Tony Thomas and Wellington Castillo have been disappointing. Reed needs to get more plate appearances to see if he can keep this up. James Adduci probably needs to be bumped to Tennessee soon.

Just be glad there are two regulars with an OPS over .700 in Peoria. That offense is brutal.

Tyler Colvin took a walk today. That's 8 in 127 AB this season (through 6 today). He took 5 in 247 AB at AA last year and 15 in 492 AB at Daytona and Tenn. His BB/PA is 3 times bigger at AA this time around and the .057 IsoD is nice. But he's awful close to the Mendoza line, is only getting on base at .270 clip and is slugging .339. Ouch.

Holliman gave up 3 earned and 6 hits in 3 in his return to AA.

And the dormant Peoria offense has struck for 11 runs through 3 innings, led by 2 doubles for Jovan Rosa and 1 each for Nate Samson and Marquez Smith.

And Tennessee ends up scoring the last 11 runs of the game (all in the 7th and 9th innings) to win 15-7.

Tyler Colvin finished 2/4 with 2 BB and a K.

.225/.286/.349; 9 BB and 34 K in 129 AB. (Last year, he walked 15 times 492 AB.)

I'm actually not too worried about the batting average with Colvin. The ISOP is the most disappointing to me. He's right about .200 for his career in ISOP, and was at .171 last year in AA. He has to get back up in that range and keep the walks progressing to be a legit prospect.

If he gets luckier with BABIP, I could see him have a solid .270/.335/.430 type season. Nothing special but probably good enough in a pitcher's league to deserve a promotion to Iowa next year.

Everything worries me about Colvin. He's essentially been an older lesser version of Pie and Patterson up to this point.

I agree that the BA isn't a concern (though I wonder when the limited power and no patience will catch up to his hitting).

Peoria won 13-7, Kyler Burke and Jovan Rosa both had multiple XBH (Burke a HR and a 2B, Rosa with 2 2Bs). Siegfried had his second consecutive rough outing.

Sadly, he's not nearly as talented as either.

BTW, 22-year old former corner infielder Blake Parker has put together a pretty interesting season thus far out of Peoria's pen: 21 IP, 1.29 ERA, 21 K/8 BB, .216 BAA, 2.91 GO/AO. And this after he put together a solid season in Mesa and Boise last year in his first year converting. Parker was actually an AZL all-star as a position player in 2006. Don't know what his stuff is like, so if Nate is reading, can you fill us in?

In some good news, Eric Patterson and Micah Hoffpauir are back in the lineup for Iowa tonight.

According to the I-Cubs, 1B Jake Fox has been demoted to AA to make room for Hoffpauir. Geoff Jones also recently retired, so the recently signed Hector Carrasco took his place.

No word yet on what moves were made to accommodate Eric Patterson's return.

Corey Coles was released to make room for EPatt. Of course you'd know that had you seen my post from earlier in the thread:

Scott Eyre was supposed to pitch an inning on Wednesday but that didn't happen. Still sounds like he'll be activated before Saturday's Cubs-Diamondbacks game:

Des Moines Register"]Eyre's gone: Pitcher Scott Eyre leaves this morning for Chicago. He's expected to be activated from the disabled list for the weekend series against Arizona.

Eyre hasn't pitched in the big leagues since spring training, because of a sore shoulder.

"I can't wait to get to Chicago and see the apartment for the first time that I've been paying for since March," Eyre said before Wednesday's game.

(The link also mentions the demotion of Fox and Holliman, the retirement of Jones and the release of Coles.)

Perhaps Eyre had travel difficulties going from the I-Cubs to Chattanooga for a game the following day.
