ST. LOUIS - Finding a way to get Ronny Cedeno's bat into the lineup hasn't been easy for Cubs manager Lou Piniella, who already has a reliable double-play combination in Ryan Theriot and Mark DeRosa.

But with Cedeno taking fly balls in center field four hours before Sunday night's game at Busch Stadium, it appeared Piniella might have found a solution.

Cedeno has been taking flies in center during early workouts the last three days, and coach Ivan DeJesus, who has been hitting fungos to him, said Cedeno has looked impressive. The hardest part is getting a read on the ball as soon as it comes off the bat, but Cedeno appears to be adept at that.

Could Cedeno soon get into games as a part-time center fielder?

"I don't know," Cedeno said. "But Lou told me to take some fly balls in center field."

 Why can't we just put him in at SS? Jesus Christ.

This is not a good idea, and even if it were, it's not fair to Pie. I see zero chance of a platoon between Cedeno and Pie, for reasons other than the fact that Cedeno is considerably better against righties.

Watch, he'll get a start in center one day, misplay a single into a double in a meaningless situation(while going 3-4 with a 2 run single), and then be removed from the game and get 3 at-bats over the following 2 weeks.

so that commitment to "pie's our center fielder" lasted what, all of 30 or 40 plate appearances? gee, wonder why the cubs struggle so badly to develop any offensive prospects.

It lasted about 15 ABs. After 4 games, it was clear that Lou wasn't sticking with Pie. He may have said he really wants the kid to succeed and he's working with him and all that junk, but he hasn't had consistent ABs since that first week. Even when Lou realized that Reed is struggling, he's not giving Pie ABs. He's converting our best SS into a CF.

Not unless he batted 30 times in the 1st 2 games of the season. By game 3, he was already sitting vs. a RHP.

It was game 5, but the point remains.

It's funny that the better defensive SS is getting moved to the OF.

Also funny that Felix nor Ronny seem to be getting a chance.

Along with Hill, it's not a coincedence the 3 all make less than a million per year.....meaning none of them have the service time it apparantly takes to get Lou's respect.

I think this is obviously being done in preparation of Pie+ being traded to the Pads for Greene :)

Its just sad that the guy who could possibly be the best answer to our problems is at home on his couch, eagerly waiting for the phone to ring. Hint: We never should have dumped him after '03.

Please just drop it.

Kenny Lofton is old and awful. He's the answer to nothing except trivia questions.

It can never be pointed out too often that after acquiring Lofton and Ramirez, our runs per game went down in 2003. Not their fault, but the romanticization of the offense "clicking" comes from the fact that the pitching became unstoppable. When you lose 5-4, your offense is inconsistent. When you win 4-3, it's solid.

If we're going to trade Pie (and it certainly looks like we'll be doing that), what makes the most sense is to trade for a RF and move Fukudome to CF. That way the only guy playing out of position is the one who actually plays good defense to begin with, and won't pout about having to move positions. A RF is a lot easier to find than a CF or SS, and if you're going to settle for subpar defense somewhere, you may as well make the move that allows you to get the best player period, and then figure out who plays where.

Edit: And does anyone else wish we'd gone after Carlos Lee instead of Soriano after 2006. I preferred Lee to begin with myself.

I'll be honest and say that I didn't want Lee... I was excited about the Soriano signing, even though I knew the length of the contract was insane.

Also, I'm not sure how anyone can say they know for a fact that Kosuke wouldn't have a problem w/ being moved to CF. He was supposedly promised RF......much like Sori was supposedly promised the lead-off spot. Then again, in Lou's bizzarro, inconsistent world, a promise made to Kosuke is different from a promise made to Sori...

I badly wanted Carlos Lee instead. Badly. He was by far the player I wanted most in that offseason. I've always considered him and A-Ram pretty similar hitters.

He's taller than Theriot and usually the taller guy plays center. Now to see if the Cubs can get him the ball.
