Ok, I am really really glad we won last night, but it sure would be nice if Lou learned how to handle a bullpen. First off, he continues to throw Howry out there in crucial situations. With that said though, what in the sam hell was Bob Howry doing pitching to Russell Branyon last night? Seriously Lou, Russel Branyon has 14 AB's against LH pitchers this year, guess how many hits he has.....ZERO! Lou is lucky the club bailed his ass out last night, and is possibly talented enough to win in spite of him having no idea how to handle a pen.

It sure would be nice if some of our Chicago media quit being scared of Lou, and would ask him some questions about some of his bullpen decisions.

The problem Lou has right now is that the back of his bullpen is getting used pretty hard, and the rest of it is left handers and Howry. With a RH dominated lineup, you can't bring in Cotts or Eyre for a full inning. Now, one of them absolutely should've pitched to Branyan, don't get me wrong, but it's an unfortunate circumstance that forced Lou to go to Howry last night.

Hopefully Zambrano and Dempster can give us about 15 innings of good work between them to let Gaudin and Samardzija get on some normal rest, and hopefully we see more of Durham, Counsell, and Branyan to allow us to get away with Eyre, Cotts, or Marshall for a full inning if we need to.

I agree, but i blame the way the bullpen is setup right now on Lou also. He could tell Hendry that he needs another RH in the pen at any time. His non use of Eyre also is to blame for the bullpen problems right now. On days when Samardzija cant pitch, that means we have 2 guys down there not available, not including whoever has been used the past few days. Quite honestly they either need to rectify this Eyre situation, or send Marshall down so he can stay stretched out(which is hard to do since Harden only goes 5-6 innings) and call up Wuertz, Ascanio, Ceda, or even Lieber. Carrying 3 lefties in the pen, and having a righty who cant really go on 2 consecutive days is just not smart. Something needs to be done

Shocking.

Do you disagree? Hes the manager he does have pretty much all the say about how many lefties and rightys he carries.

Do you have something to contribute? Unless you're contributing to the topic at hand, we're probably better off without the sarcastic interjection that you think somebody is being irrational.

Why not just use Marshall instead of Bob?

There's no reason to protect Sean by only using him in Lefty/Lefty matchups. Does anyone really know why Sean continues to perform well, yet continues to be underutilized?

it was a bad move having Howry face Branyan. I don't think anyone's going to argue that. But it's not like he can go the rest of the year never playing Eyre or Howry again, and opposing GM's aren't falling over each other to give us more effective pen help. I have zero confidence that anyone in the minors would play any better than Howry right now.

Id just like some explanation why Eyre isnt being used AT ALL when the pen needs as many fresh arms that they can get. Hes been up since last Weds and still hasnt seen the field, yet hes warmed up probably 10 times.

Because the only other guys in the pen that can go multiple innings are our primary setup men at the moment.

Also, I think their plan is to piggyback Marshall on days Harden starts.

I think Cotts and Marshall have proven that they can be used for full innings. They actually have better numbers against RHH than LHH. That might be because they're only allowed to face crappy RHH or something, but at this point they're better options for a full inning than Howry.

OK. Somehow I missed that Lieb isn't around now.

Yup and quite honestly, he could be pretty valuable right now. While he may not be lights out, he can go multiple innings, and he can be effective, and he could push Gaudin out of the RH longman role, and into the RH setup role.

You have to remember that Lou only had 3 lefties in the bullpen to face Branyon.

Let's get a good count of all the mistakes we had to cover in order to win last night:

1) Had to cover for Lou not using a lefty against Branyan. Did that by scoring some more runs.

2) Had to cover for Quade screwing up 2 send calls @ 3B. Again, ditto -- bats covered his butay.

3) Reed Johnson had to bail Lee out of hitting into yet another critical DP.

Am I missing anything?

I felt the ump started getting a little generous with Marmol on the mound.

Selective modding? Please call abuck on it everytime he's sarcastic too? Or does he get a pass? Sorry TT, I've never had any problem with you, but the selective favoritism by mods on who gets to be sarcastic and who doesn't is ridiculous.

HUH? He gave a ratonal response to Soul's question. How is that "callng him out" or "selective moderating"? Do tell.

I'd love for Piniella to read this article sometime. I know late June was so long ago, so he could use the refresher.

118 pitches for no reason after throwing 125 last time out. And he had at least one guy in the bullpen who needed to get work in.

I was referring to his post to me, not the post I quoted.

All I said was "shocking". It wasn't a personal attack and I got called out on sarcasm, when NSBB favorites get to be sarcastic all the time. Sorry, it just irritated me.

If you have a problem with someone's post, report it. Problem solved.

Everyone thinks someone else is a favorite.

I made the comment because it was the second consecutive thread I clicked on where you did nothing but but rail on a poster for supposedly being irrational without contributing at all. If your response is "what about this guy?", then you probably know that my comment wasn't off base.

As for "selective moderating", the mods do what they can, but it's difficult to moderate every post. If you think someone is out of line, report the post. And also understand that not all modding is done in a public avenue. Not all warnings, suspensions, bannings, etc. are made public.
