Continuing to start Reed Johnson over Felix Pie against righties is mind-boggling moronic. Pie gives you more power, faster speed on the basepaths, better average, and better defense.

What, in major league play, shows you that Felix Pie is a better hitter than Reed Johnson? You can show me all the projections in the world from baseballprospectus that tells you that, but that doesn't mean jack.

Felix Pie has been a disappointment this year. He strikes out at an high rate, and doesn't walk. If that doesn't scream Corey Patterson to Cubs fans, nothing will.

Felix has looked overmatched this year many times.

Here, forgive me for quoting myself from another thread:

So, stats since Lou and Gerald worked with Pie on his swing (April 21 vs. Mets, so now there have been a total of 11 games):

Felix Pie: 5 starts, 25 PA, 7 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, .333/.400/.523/.923

Reed Johnson: 10 starts, 50 PA, 8 H, .190/.280/.190/.470

They took the time to work on Pie's swing, and despite a marked improvement, they refuse to give him an equal share of playing time. Reed Johnson has been awful the past two weeks, and that includes his two good games against lefties. The only thing Reed Johnson has been doing better than Pie over the past couple weeks is leaning into pitches.

This year OPS vs. right handers:

.661

Guess which one is Felix and which on is Johnson.

FWIW, while he hasn't been better, Felix hasn't been that much worse against RHP than Johnson. Might as well play the younger player who needs to be given a chance to sink or swim and plays better defense, to boot.

Johnson vs. RHP this year .654 OPS (.283/.333/.321)

Pie vs. RHP this year .644 OPS (.231/.311/.333)

Sample size. I know. I'm just saying it's not like Johnson has done so well that you can't pull him from the lineup. He's barely performed better than Pie, while everyone talks about how terrible Pie has been. He's pretty much just as much of a black hole against RHP as Felix.

Heh, I was way behind this post. I'm guessing ESPN's stats are behind, because these would seem to reflect today's performances by both players.

Don't want to talk about Pie's .224 batting average? Or his horrible .291 obp?

Despite which Pie is still outperforming Reed Johnson?

That IsoD of 67 seems like a decent sign, too. But I'm not sure how much it matters with a BA that low.

Not a ton. It's mostly affected by the small number of plate appearances. Pie is definitely much closer to Soriano as a hitter than Fukudome in terms of patience and discipline. However, he's been a very productive hitter at every phase of the minor leagues, and he'll be a productive hitter on the major league level if given the chance. The real Felix is much closer to his production over the past two weeks than it is to his production over the first two weeks.

If his OPS is better against right handers, if he's younger, better fielder, more potential, better speed, has been doing much better the past couple weeks...Then I think he should start at least against RH.

I figured as much, especially the sample size part. I'm not totally sold on Pie's ability to eventually produce like the projections suggest, but I would really like to see him given an actual chance to do so.

Rotoworld's take on Marmol two innings yesterday:

Carlos Marmol pitched the final two innings of a six-run game Saturday against the Cardinals.

Well, he did have a whole day off Friday after throwing 2 2/3 innings between Wednesday and Thursday. Lou Piniella seems determined to have Marmol on the disabled list, if not in James Andrews' office, by the All-Star break. The 25-year-old has pitched 21 innings in the Cubs' 30 games this season. At least he was more efficient than usual today, throwing 24 pitches while retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

Pie has been better the last 2 weeks, but that's, what, 4 at-bats?

Lou needs a relaxing weekend at a spa or something...his decision-making has been suspect

Suspect? Its been downright assanine.

Well the game hasnt even started again, but lineups are out and Cedeno and Pie are sitting their ass on the bench once again. We are facing a righty, whos not that good, but Lou still thinks Reed is a better option than Felix. Dont worry Im sure Felix will get the start when we face Harang and Cueto. Oh and Cedeno still is OPSing over 1.000 and hasnt started a damn game in over a week, but dont worry Lou said he will find a spot for him....

Remember when Pie was going to get his chance and Lou was going to find a spot for Cedeno in the lineup? So much for that I guess. Can't wait to see Marshall and Gallagher pitch 10 pitches a piece in this game tonight.

Lou found a spot for Ronny.....sitting next to Blanco to keep the old man company.
