Percentage wise we have to be the worst ballclub when it comes to steal.

 

To borrow from PJ O'Rourke,

Giving Lou Piniella the opportunity to call for stolen bases is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

 

It's strange, because that was one of the things that he was praised for when he was hired. His teams during his managerial career had always been one of the best in stolen base percentage.

I don't remember him being this aggressive (and reckless) last year.

 

He was. IIRC, Dan Fox's work at Baseball Prospectus showed the Cubs were the worst basestealing team in the majors last year.
