ETA: According to BR's "Batting Game Score" Theriot didn't just have a bad day yesterday, he had the worst day in the majors.

I don't think he had that bad of a day yesterday. He got robbed on a great play up the middle by Tulo in the 1st and then killed the rally in the 8th (I think) by lining into the DP. He made good contact at least twice but was unlucky.

Not that I'm in favor of him playing all the time, I'm just sayin'.

DeRo is getting a pass. If things remain as they are now, among the trio of DeRosa, Theriot, and Cedeno, Mark should sit in favor of Ronny when Sori returns. At the very least, Lou should consider moving Soto up a spot in the batting order because he's been hot over the last week.

EDIT: This isn't a commentary on Theriot's worth it's about accommodating the hot batters.

Would have liked some more Pie, but I can live with that. EDIT: Forgot Perez was a lefty, nvm.

Hopefully Riot hurries up his return to reality so we can bench him when Alf returns.

DeRosa is at .284/.389/.473 right now and is a better player year-to-year than cedeno and theriot, how does that make him the odd man out?

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever read in my life. It was one friggin' game in April, not a World Series game, not a playoff game, not even a game anywhere in the realm of possibly being close to determining a playoff spot. Absolutely ridiculous statement.

no offense, but this sentiment is idiotic.

How so?

I mean I'd like him to keep it up for as long as he can but I really don't think he will. Believing, as I do, that Cedeno is a much more viable option at SS, I'd rather he have the remaining spot in the starting lineup when Alf's return sends DeRo back to 2B in 5 days. Seeing as Lou likes to play the hot hand, it would ultimately be in the teams best interest if Cedeno got that spot. If he and Riot both stay hot for now or just play around the same level, odds are Riot is getting that spot which would also probably lead to him getting more time even when he inevitably cools down.

Cedeno is .375/.444/.563 and Theriot is .321/.384/.449

My comments have nothing to do with yearly production. DeRo's numbers have been on the decline over the past week. I'm referring to Lou's penchant for playing the hot hand. Also, it should be noted that DeRosa is most effective when rested during stretches of the season (he faded during stretches last season and in TX the year before). There should be no issue with sitting him if someone else has the ability to produce offensively (and can play his spot defensively).

DeRosa is hitting .240/.323/.280 over the past 7 days. Right now it's not an issue because Soriano is out but if he's in a prolonged slump and Cedeno is continuing to hit he should sit.

No shocks at all there. It was quite predictable that Pie and Fontenot would be on the bench against a lefty.

okay. i think lieber is, overall, a better option for the starting rotation than dempster. i also think that marshall is a better pitcher than jason marquis, so obviously i'd prefer that marshall get more innings than marquis. shall i start rooting for two of our five starters to get drilled over the next month so that we can get the rotation that i feel is best?

Thats not a terribly fair analogy. Having one player in a lineup of 8 cool down does not equal a pitcher getting shelled.

I'm pretty sure it means he had the worst day of any Major Leaguer yesterday. Not the worst day in history. The worst day yesterday. I don't see what's so stupid about that.

What are you talking about??? I was not the one that said he had the worst day ever, and that wasn't even what the BR measure said either. It's a modified Bill James statistic to analyze how "good" or "bad" a player did in a day and takes into account strikeouts, GIDP and even errors. It's just a statistic from ONE game and I thought that it was interesting and tied into what was being discussed. The only reason I brought it up was because I was wondering if Lou would have a knee jerk reaction to theriot like he seems to with pie and hill. Geez, this Cedeno v. Theriot battle has got people really riled up!

Hmmm, well I would like to have had seen those two flipped. I think I'll stop trying to predict what Lou will do.

My guess is that it isn't who Lou thinks is playing better, but he thinks that Theriot's skillset is better for the top of the lineup. If those two were at 7 and 8 in the order, Cedeno would hit 7th most of the time (as he did on April 12th, the only day that they have hit 7 and 8).

That situation isn't going to happen very often though, because for Lou to bump Theriot down from the top 2 spots, you need to have both Soriano and Johnson in the lineup (maybe Fontenot, and maybe Pie if he's hitting well), and then you have to sneak Cedeno in there somehow.

Does anyone have any idea WHY theriot is at short while Cedeno is at second - it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Maybe cause Cedeno plays second better than Theriot.

Plays short better too.
