thanks for the scouting reports, geniuses.

hill was, without a doubt, the best cubs pitcher from mid-2006 through 2007. that's a long period of time and a lot of starts (40+). and he was unquestionably great during that time.

Maybe he'll take you to the prom if you ask nicely.

oh burn.

Lets please stop this gentlemen.

I was just talking about your and Wilcofans past abuck and I just didn't want this to derail the thread. You both have given each other shots in the last couple of weeks and I was hoping to stop it from going on again.

So Lou has to make assumptions about the health status of his 2nd best pitcher? He can't be bothered to talk to the medical staff in Iowa about just how bad the medical issue is? Ugh.

I can't imagine managers of the major league teams spend any time consulting with minor league medical staffs. He is likely making those assumptions based on what he has heard from his normal source on the health of minor leaguers -- perhaps Hendry or someone close to Hendry. I think it was terrible decision to send Hill to the minors, but following that decision, I'm sure Piniella is waiting to hear that Hill has regained his control and is ready or close to being ready to help the Cubs.

I loathe no person on this planet more than Joe Morgan. Here's the rest of the Cubs quote...

Kevin (Memphis): Hey Joe. Thanks for taking my question. Can the Cardinals sustain their success, or will Pujols alone not be enough to carry them to the playoffs?

Joe Morgan: When you have an Albert Pujols, he will make everyone around him better. If you get off to a good start when you were supposed to be a bad team, it builds a lot of confidence. The Cubs look like the best team in that division, but they are not the best team. They can win the division, I think, but the Cubs have to be favored.

That's a nice transition by Piniella from not knowing anything about Hill's back injury to proclaiming it's more of a mental relief than anything phsyical.

But it's so unlike the Cubs to go to the media to promote the idea that Hill's problems are all mental.

Gotta take care of the back first and then go from there. There is no doubt about it, if your back is bothering you it's going to change how you throw.

We're not talking about some regular minor leaguer. We're talking about one of your team's best pitchers. I'd expect my major league manager to know the status of Hill a day or two after he was removed from a game for a back injury.

Of course, back injuries aren't that big of a problem for pitchers - they never use their back anyway, right? And it's not like they can be a chronic problem. He might as well have stubbed his toe in the clubhouse. So you're right - no biggie.

This comes several days after Piniella said during a pregame show that he was paying "very close attention" to both Hill and Marshall pitching at Iowa since he wants to have two lefties in the rotation.

He knows they're both in the minors. What more do you expect from him? He's too busy to keep tabs on everyone in the minors...

If you feel personally attacked by that post, you have incredibly thin skin for all the shots you take at others.

The more I hear, the more I think Lou might be the worst manager in baseball, other than Dusty Baker.

Carrie Muskat / MLB.com[/url]"] Meanwhile, lefty Rich Hill, who is on Iowa's disabled list with back spasms, was able to throw 50 pitches on the side Thursday. The left-hander, who opened the year in the Cubs' rotation, will throw a simulated game on Sunday.

"We'll see where he's at," Piniella said of Hill, who was 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in five starts before he was optioned to Iowa.

Right now, the Cubs have one left-hander in the rotation in Ted Lilly, and one in the pen in Scott Eyre. Piniella would like another southpaw starter.

Hill will need more than one simulated game before he can be recalled.

"We'll see where he's at physically, and where he's at command-wise," Piniella said. "I think that will be determined as to when he starts over there. Not for here, not right now."

Will the simulated game also ease his recovery from the "mental break" that Lou thinks he's on?

geez, it's basically like he's doing spring training all over again. what a waste the first half of the season will have been for him.

Hopefully some time soon he will learn how to throw strikes again. The Cubs could really use "good" Rich Hill.

hopefully the cubs will get his mechanics back where they were last season, and leave them there.

Rich is getting a bit old for this up-down business.

I don't think it was discouraging. He threw a lot more strikes in his first start in two weeks and was still able to strike guys out.
