after the first trainer visit, the announcer mentioned that hill bent down like he was touching his toes and theorized it may be something with his back. but doesn't he do that on the mound fairly often?

There was a recent article in which Hill talked about how he was struggling to keep his arm up. I can't find it for the life of me.

Still no update on Hill, by the way.

Was it this one?

Yeah, that's it. Thanks.

I'm glad it was only back stiffness. Even if he's fine for his next start, though, I'd have to believe that this is a blow to his chances for returning in the next few weeks. Marshall may very well pass Hill and since Piniella wants two lefties in the rotation but only two lefties, if Marshall has some success, Hill might be spending a decent amount of time in Iowa.

Hill to climb

Even though the strained back Rich Hill suffered at Iowa is not considered serious, he apparently has a long way to go before rejoining the Cubs' rotation.

That's according to assistant general manager Randy Bush, who was in Round Rock, Texas, to scout Hoffpauir, Hill and former Cubs relievers Sean Marshall and Kevin Hart, who are at Iowa to be stretched back into starting roles.

"He saw [Hill] pitch," Piniella said. "And of the three [pitchers] who are there starting, he's the furthest away. He's got some work to do. He's got to work his way out of it, that's all."

Marshall started Saturday for Iowa and allowed three hits and no runs in five innings, lowering his ERA to 1.50 after three starts. Hart pitches Monday. Hill is 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA.

it's like 2006 and 2007 never happened. the cubs' feelings on hill are just weird...can't figure it out.

you have watched him pitch so far this year right?

he has terrible location and control

If I were Rich, the next time i pitched for the Cubs, I would throw a fastball so wild that it went straight into the Cubs' dugout and bonked Lou in the gut.

That's a good way to stay in the big leagues.

thanks for the scouting reports, geniuses.

hill was, without a doubt, the best cubs pitcher from mid-2006 through 2007. that's a long period of time and a lot of starts (40+). and he was unquestionably great during that time. i realize he's had problems this year, but they are talking about him like he's some kind of project who has never had any kind of success...and it seems as though the chances of him making it back to the big league team by the ASB are virtually none.

i completely understand that he's struggled this year. without a doubt. but if any other team demoted and subsequently buried a guy who had been their best starter over the span of 1 1/2 seasons after really only two bad starts, people here would be scratching their heads. but because he's on the cubs, everyone wants immediate results and has no patience, and his demotion doesn't seem strange.

Per rotoworld:

Rich Hill was placed on the DL at Triple-A Iowa due to back spasms.

"I don’t think it’s serious," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "Probably more of a mental break than anything, I’d assume. That’s just my assumption. [The break] may not be bad. It might be the best tonic of all. But I haven’t heard anything wrong of a serious nature, anything fundamentally wrong with his back." Except the knife buried in it, of course.

So let me see if I understand. Even if Gallagher pitches well this week, he'll soon get bumped in favor of Marshall.... because we want another lefty?

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see either Sean get a real shot in the rotation, but why do we continue to care so much which handed our pitchers are? Give me the five best, period.

Maybe he'll take you to the prom if you ask nicely.

So Lou has to make assumptions about the health status of his 2nd best pitcher? He can't be bothered to talk to the medical staff in Iowa about just how bad the medical issue is? Ugh.
