i'm aware of that, but it either means one of two things: 1) he was unfairly abused by the fans that year, or 2) warp is nonsense

Why can't it be both?

WARP is close to useless - it assumes the existance of magical players that are somehow replacement level on both offense and defense; those players do not exist. Replacement-level hitters tend to be average fielders for their position. Then factor in the fact that FRAR is a mediocre defensive metric at best, and stir.

That said, Neifi was an outstanding defensive player, and while that fails to make him a good ballplayer, you can make the arguement that he (in his prime) was a better than Ryan Theriot is right now, in his prime.

Which, I just want to add - Ryan Theriot is older than Cesar Izturis. True story! I will continue repeating this until people stop refering to him as young or alluding to his prospect status at any point later than about 2004.

I didn't see it mentioned, but even as good as Theriot has been this year, Ronny is still blowing his numbers away (albeit in a much smaller sample).

This is a good problem to have, for what that's worth.

Cedeno has an OBP edge, but Theriot has him in SLG and OPS+. It's close.

It wasn't mentioned because it isn't true. Theriot has been better so far this year.

Theriot: .338/.408/.485

Cedeno: .333/.407/.417

You are right though that it is a very good problem to have. It's nice to know that right now they're both good bets to be productive if started on any given day, and hopefully it continues for at least one of them (I honestly don't care which one).

Given that Cedeno is playing well and having good ABs, I'd much prefer him to Theriot. It's certainly possible that the .800 OPS Cedeno we're seeing is the Ronny Cedeno we'll get for the next several year (how likely? who knows). But the chances that Theriot will maintain an .800 OPS (let alone near .900) for an entire season are so slim, given his age and past production, that I think you have to give Cedeno more ABs.

I would be happy with a 50-50 split between the two until somebody wins the job hands down, probably Cedeno.

Cedeno is getting a lot of reps at 2nd too so that little 3 man rotation Lou has with those two and Fontenot is working out ok so far. He can just plug in DeRosa when a lefty is in and put Murton in left. I like the decent options so far and it will be interesting to see which players can keep up this pace, or at least sustain an above average one.
