Jeff will no doubt be up "full time" before 2010 and definitely before 2011. His deal runs up after 2011 season with club options for 2012 and 2013. His deal is for $10 Million over 5 and obviously is on the fast track. The organization didn't sign him for $10 Million (with incentives the deal could total $17 Million) to have him pitch 3 or 4 years in the Minors.

Hell, there's a good chance he'll be pitching in Iowa sometime this year and an outside chance he'll be a September call up, if for nothing else to give him a taste (hopefully a part of a team fighting for playoffs) of what he's been working so hard for.

That's not how the system works. Samardzija is Cubs major league property for 6 years assuming they put him on the 25 man roster for good after 3(I think) minor league seasons.

What happened to that Bruce Willis guy. Die hard something....

I believe he was traded for 4 good innings of Steve Trachsel.

What about that O'Malley kid? He's clearly nothing, but he had one good game against a crappy team, he's tiny and white and Irish, so the boozers of course will love him. Just call him "McGritty."

I believe he was signed to a major league contract, which means the normal rules don't apply. With a major league contract the option clock begins immediaely, and Rule 5 isn't even an issue because he's already on the 40-man roster. In fact, if you look at the 40-man roster on cubs.com you'll see him listed.

Samardzija will be eligible for four option years as long as that fourth option year is used before his fifth full season in the system. He's on his second option year this season.

Bur SSR is right on how long Samardzija is Cub property. The Cubs have control over him through 2013 - he has that 5 year contract through 2011 and then the Cubs have club options on him for the next two seasons.

Having a major league contract has nothing to do with accruing major league service time unless there's a specific clause saying that the cubs will not offer arbitration as Hideki had in his original 3 year contract. Shark will still need to serve his full six seasons in the bigs to gain FA eligibility. If he doesn't arrive until 2010, the Cubs will own him through 2015.
