he's done absolutely everything asked for him, and I haven't heard him publicly complain much at all no matter how much we jerked him around.

Except hit home runs and play average defense. Murton knows he needs to do this to play everyday in the bigs. Unfortunately he just can't.

Wow, you're just knocking them out of the park left and right today.

Seriously. First bringing up RBIs, now this?

Murt must be on his last option by now, and with Soriano not expected to be gone any longer than the 15 day minimum, Murt would not get much time up, and theyd have to put him through waivers, and hed be grabbed up in a minute. Patterson has only been up and down once, and can be bounced around a few more rounds.

I don't think that's right.

It's not, Murton already burned an option year by getting sent down after spring training.

well, then its just a strange decision. Youd think that if a guy gets injured, youd want to bring in someone who plays the same position.

That's what I thought. Once you burn an option year by getting sent down, you can go back and forth from the majors to the minors as much as the team wants, as I recall.

If it is, its the closest thing to making sense of this move that I've heard.

If Hendry thought he was ever going to get anything substantial for Murton, he' just flushed it down the toilet now by letting teams know he doesn't even consider him an adequate fill-in when Soriano goes down with extended injury. Since has has absolutely no value to the club now as a player or as a bargaining chip, might as well do Murton a favor and just dump him off to whoever gives him the best opportunity to play.

What do you think is the real reason Murton isn't starting or in the bigs? Does Jim Hendry not like red heads?

That's right. The only stipulation is that, once a player is sent down, he can't be called back up for at least 10 days (unless it's to replace an injured player). Each year someone is sent down is one option, not each time within a year.

all this to have a cpatt-epatt matchup. then we can bring murton up when the reds leave town

Heh, that was my immediate reaction to this.

This is stupid, but I have to admit that I'm not pissed off at all. Nothing this organization does surprises me anymore. Nothing.

Nope, he's just an idiot.

Murton isn't a flawless player without holes in his game, but neither is Eric Patterson by any means. Each has their own individual strengths and contributions they can bring to the team. The difference is that Hendry doesn't value Murton's strengths (OBP, Quality At Bats), but values Eric Patterson's (Speed, Left Handed).

Granted. But Patterson will not be playing everyday. Fontenot will. If Murton is brought up, he would most likely be playing everyday. That exposes him more.

Then the question is why in the world would anyone want Fontenot playing everyday over Murton playing every day.

Even as AAA filler Murton's value is questionable at this point. Once an org lets the world know that it projects a player's ceiling as a 6th or maybe 5th OF with no CF capability then he's just a waste of space at any level higher than A ball. Trade him for a PTBNL, waive him, release him, whatever. It makes little difference anymore.

He's not starting because he can only play the corners and we have Fukudome and Soriano. He's not in the bigs because the Cubs haven't traded him yet.

Has anyone seen any word of this other than second hand radio reports? I'm not doubting the OP that its true, its just weird to see the Score report this and not see it online several hours later.

Because Fontenot doesn't have to play everyday. Johnson can play left and DeRosa can play 2B.

Rotoworld:

Eric Patterson - OF - CHC - Apr. 16 - 1:46 pm et

The Chicago Tribune believes the Cubs will call up Eric Patterson, not Matt Murton, as the replacement for Alfonso Soriano should Soriano land on the DL.

If that really happens, then Jim Hendrhy was lying through his teeth when he kept saying he thought Murton would be a solid left fielder on a lot of teams. The Tribune's Paul Sullivan suspects the Cubs will give Mark DeRosa a lot of time in left field, with Mike Fontenot taking over at second. Apr. 16 - 1:46 pm et

I was wrong on that. I don't know who will be playing everyday. My point is only that it is not as if some huge injustice has been done to Matt Murton when the difference between what he brings compared to what Patterson brings and the rotations involved are incredibly negligible at best.

So much Matt Murton love, it's really pretty simple. His SLG so far in Iowa is below 300. THREE HUNDRED. Jose Macias could beat that number.

A guy that (a) can only play corner OF, (b) can't play it well, and © hits groundballs with no power, has (d) little value at the major league level. He can take a walk. Terrific. Trade him to Oakland, Beane will love him.

This was my thought too. I really doubt it matters much really. Sori will be back in 2 weeks and the club will continue to roll on the back of Lee. At least we can enjoy an much more balanced lineup while he is out
