between a few new people posting about this here and the link earlier in the thread, i can't help but think dusty has a street-team of some sort trying to do pro-baker revisionist history.

is dusty a bad person? no, he seems nice enough. is dusty a bad manager? yes.

I absolutely think he is a terrible manager. I just think, in general, that managers and coaches get way too much blame.

I like Dusty, I think most of us did when they signed him.

I also think he changed the mindset of the "lovable losers".

I am sure there will be more boos then cheers.

But told tell me he ruined Wood and Prior.

He did not have a 2 man rotation and blew out their respective arms.

Zambrano seems to be ok....

We can argue about his managerial decisions in game 6 of the NLCS...beyond that I think Dusty is certainly not the worst manager the Cubs have had...

But stop blaming him for Wood and Prior...

Most people here DID like Dusty when he was hired. I remember a gamethread on here from spring training in 2003 where he was praised for doing something as simple as arguing a call in spring training. I was on his bandwagon, too. But that changed when all of us saw him in action. The fact that we liked him before we even really knew him means next to nothing.

I also don't think he deserves any praise for changing the "lovable losers" thing, either, considering there was never anything remotely lovable about losing.

Huh?

But I know what you were trying to say. In general, I agree with most of your post. I liked Dusty in the early going too. Things went bad and it was time for him to go. Wood's arm starting getting abused in high school and he has pre-existing injury problems so it's not like Dusty "ruined" him. But he did abuse both Wood and Prior's arms a bit. I'm not all that hung up on assigning blame anymore. I don't wish Dusty any ill will although I do enjoy getting a laugh out of some of his quotes. And I'd never boo him at the stadium. But that is just me.

A buddy and I had this conversation today.

We both agree that Dusty didn't do anything with Prior and Wood that any other manager would have done. You ride the um. . . horses, so to speak.

Baker's love affair with some ancient baseball philosophy is what did him in. The "base cloggers" crap, etc.

Things like hitting Lenny Harris leadoff. . . . . things like pitching around Harris to get to Lowell in the NLCS.

The good thing is that Baker is gone. He'll ruin the Reds. Yeah, they may win this year and the players will love him --- heck, he holds no one accountable, especially the vets. When it's all said and done, they'll stink.

Just thought I'd inform you that "of" is a preposition and not a helping verb. It helps your writing appear a bit more educated. The content is bad enough; I thought I would at least help you with the form.

I don't need your help. I can handle myself on here. I'm a tough guy.

In 2003 Dusty took the credit for turning the losers into winners. The Cubs won and Dusty was treated as a god. Did he deserve it? No. No more than Jim Frey, Don Zimmer, or any other manager at the time the team played well enough to win. But I can remember how they all were "great managers" because the Cubs had won. Now they didn't win the World Series. They won the division. They didn't get to the World Series. Did they suddenly get stupid when the playoffs started? No. The teams weaknesses were exposed and they couldn't win the games they had to win. The manager gets the credit when the team does well and the blame when the team does poorly.

My point of this rambling is that Dusty can be defended for some of the things he did. But there are so many things that made no sense. Be it lineups, players he wanted signed, pitcher abuse, double switches that didn't work, double switches that were not reported to the umpire correctly, stupid fishing analogies, players that saved the season, or any other dumbass things that I don't remember. I will never expend the energy to boo Dusty, much like I would not boo my ex wife,(somethings just are not worth the effort),and I will never say a good thing about his managing style or abilities.

This being enters with apologies for spelling, grammar, punctuation errors, and incoherent ramblings of a middle aged grumpy semi drunk man.
