what about ryan howard? hes still super young. he has the power, the average, rbi's,etc. the only downfall is that he k's too much. hes a bigger guy but if you were in an AL team he could be DH and be great protection for other batters and a huge run producer. same with prince fielder but i cannot tolerate that guy.

He's actually not really "super young". He'll be 29 in November.

He isn't young, he's only a little more than 1 year younger than Aramis. Howard turns 29 in November.

In all seriousness, the player I would pick would be Prior.

I would do anything for a healthy Prior.

Lol this guy is living in the past.

Bringing Baker back, Prior, toothpicks, and Bartman....

2003 almost got to the world series. 2008 we are far from it. The clear cut solution is to go back to what we were doing.

What were we doing? Ruining young pitchers?

:rotfl: Okay, buddy, whatever you want. I guess you like the fact that Dusty set this franchise back quite a few years.

If it wasn't for Alex Gonzales Dusty Baker would of gotten us to the world series, and we most likely would of won. Thank you very much.

Screw that - we were world champions in 1908. Dig up Frank Chance!

Or...maybe he could've taken Prior out when he started struggling?

Oh yeah and we want a manager to hold the pitchers hand throughout the whole game..

i want a manager who will take a tiring pitcher out when he has an 8 run lead.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then.

I'd have to go with Peavy, or maybe Utley. Vlad would be in the conversation, I'm surprised his name never comes up any more...his down years are worth an OPS of around .950, and he's averaged 150 games the last four years. I think he's got another good 4-5 years left in him, and is not overpriced at $15 mil at all. Victor Martinez is another guy I'd have to think hard about. And of course, you can't have this conversation without starting your considerations with the already mentioned ARod and Pujols.

Vlads name never comes up because he's declining and he's ancient. Plus I'm going to assume Truffles scenario is for an NL team - which means he'd have to play outfield, and while he still has a gun, I'm pretty sure his range is getting pretty bad.

If I'm building a team for the future, I'm going to take somebody young.

Vlad's body is beginning to fail him. I don't like his prospects 3-4 years from now at all.

I won't argue with anyone who doesn't like his age...but I don't think the statement that his body is beginning to fail him is justified at all. Only in 2003 did he play in less than 140 games since becoming a regular player. 2006 is the only other year he played under 150 games. The only time he's missed any kind of extended period was in 2003, when he missed 50 games. That's all. His K numbers are still in line with career norms, so he's still seeing the ball well. His 2006 was down slightly, when he posted a career worse OPS+ of 138, but he rebounded to just under 150 last year. His range factors have always been slightly above or below league averages, I don't see a drop off there. I don't buy that Vlad is in decline and his body is failing him. I'd be happy as could be if Soriano could keep pace with him. I'd much rather Hendry opened up the purse strings and made the splash a couple of years earlier and have taken him instead.

david wright was my pick.

hits for average, draws a lot of walks, blossoming into a potential 40 home run threat and will give you 40+ doubles too. stole 34 bases last year. has been healthy for pretty much his entire professional career. is a little above average defensively.

BP has him at a .315-.320 EqA from third base, where offense is hard to come by for many clubs, and considering his .338 EqA last season, I think BP's estimates may end up being on the low side. They project him to be worth anywhere from $24 to $27M a year over the next 7 years, which might be the highest multi-year MORP in baseball.

in conclusion: david wright.
