I couldn't pass this one liner up:

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Cardinals fans love to tell anyone who will listen how they’re the smartest in baseball, and on Wednesday night they may have proven it.

They knew better than to show up and watch this team.

hahahahahahahaha

That is awesome, and very true.

I watched some of Tuesday night's game (their first of the freaking season) and the stadium was practically empty. And it was the 8th inning of a 2-1 game. Obviously it was a rescheduled makeup, but still, that struck me as pathetic.

Actually it isn't very true. It's not even kind of true. I wish it was, so a message would be sent to ownership. Your practically empty stadium sold 39,000 tickets to that game. Jeff Passan is a bitter KC homer. The game was a delayed start, the forecast called for rain and by the 8th inning it was probably around 45 degrees.

ST. LOUIS (AP)—The St. Louis Cardinals’ regular-season sellout streak ended at 165 games Wednesday night with an announced attendance of 39,915 in 51-degree weather for a game against the Colorado Rockies.

It’s also the first non-sellout at 3-year-old Busch Stadium and the first for the franchise since Sept. 28, 2005, at the old Busch Stadium.

Manager Tony La Russa said he didn’t notice the empty seats, and didn’t mind in any case.

“We’ve still sold 3 million tickets, haven’t we?” La Russa said. “The fans are supporting us.”

The team had 161 sellouts the first two seasons at the new park, missing one game in 2006 due to a rainout with the Giants that was not made up, and also sold out the last three games of the final year at old Busch Stadium in 2005.

Wednesday’s attendance was about 4,000 shy of the stadium capacity of 43,975.

Tickets sold and paid attendance doesn't prove one way or another whether a stadium was mostly empty in the 8th inning. Not that I think it's pathetic to be nearly empty in that scenario.

For the record, Wrigley Field is 1 for 2 in sellouts this year. And 100% of the games were between rivals that are 90 miles apart.

considering the support that they get from the fans, the cards have really put a piss-poor product together the last two years. it's not their fault that carpenter got hurt, but they should be able to put a better team on the field than they've had.

The truth lies somewhere between what Passan's article talks about and what the Cards homers will tell you (not looking at you wolf). I was at the rescheduled game using work tickets that people couldn't use because they already had other plans. You had to use your stub from the day before and I would bet that a lot of people just couldn't get down there or get their tickets to somebody else. I thought it was a decent crowd considering the circumstances and my wife (6 1/2 months pregnant) and I left during the top of the 8th when it started getting pretty chilly out and it was about 9:30 already.

That said, i did enjoy the yahoo article calling out many of the clowns that represent "Cardinal Nation". I've had a few good baseball conversations with Cards fans at games and those people realize how blindly loyal "TBFIB" are regardless of what any of the players may do.
