There weren't visual obstructions at Wrigley Field yesterday to block the view from a pair of rooftop clubs whose owner has refused to share 17 percent of his profits with the team.

But if Tom Gramatis hasn't paid up by the time the Cubs return home April 15, team officials say the obstructions will be installed.

Cubs vice president Mike Lufrano says the team hope it won't have to do that. But he says it's unfair to other rooftop partners to let one rooftop get away without paying.

For some reason it bugs me to have to read this article in a St. LOUIS newspaper (even though it's a AP article). So . . . here it is (the same words) but in a Tribune article: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/wire/chi-ap-bbn-cubs-rooftopowne,0,4788111.story

Bottom line: the rooftop owner in question knew the deal when he set up shop. If that's the agreed-upon price, he has to pay it.

If not, he shouldn't be able to capitalize on Cubs games simpy because he disagrees. Bring it up at the next round of negotiation.

this deal is fair to the rooftop owners. if it weren't for the baseball games being played, they'd be making a total of $0 on having people sit on their roof. the cubs are providing the product; they deserve some of the profit as well.

they are still making money hand over fist

How much does it cost to even sit on one of the rooftops on average?

hundreds, though generally they don't offer single tickets. the cost is in the thousands to rent the rooftop for one game

There's an agreement in place. At this point, I don't care whether the agreement is fair to the rooftop owners are not. The agreement exists, so they should have to pay what they have agreed to.
Yep; if they thought the agreement was unfair they shouldn't have agreed to those terms in the first place. They could have continued negotiating.

The rooftop owners wouldn't have even had to come to an agreement with the Cubs if they hadn't meddled with the permit for the bleacher expansions a few years ago. The screens in 2004 and the ensuing agreement were products of their own making.

yeah, i don't think this owner is going to get any sympathy. he's profiting from someone else's product.

Not that I don't agree with you, but my how things have changed over the past few years.

People were probably scared back then that the sharing would drive the rooftop owners out of business, hence changing the look & feel of Wrigley. Now that's it clear that won't happen, it's back to business 101 -- pay to play.

Aren't the bars in the area also profiting from someone else's product?

It typically rented out to Corps. at around 120 a head. You figure they can typically squeeze about 75 (guessing) people on average, you're talking about 10 grand a game.

yup, sometimes more. So you're talking about $800,000 per rooftop per season, not including what they make off off of food. I'm sure multiple rooftops are owned by the same people

Do they own/sublet the apartments too? Or are those things gutted out and just used for entertaining fans?

It depends on how you consider profiting. I'm sure some good lawyer would try to prove this.
