Jose Cruz Jr is in the Astros camp as an NRI. He's currently hitting 353/.431/.608 in 51 AB. He's a switch hitter who can play all three outfield spots. There are some thoughts that he could beat out Reggie Abercrombie for a spot on the Astros' bench. However, the Astros are in need of starting pitching.

Their current rotation is Oswalt, Backe (coming back from surgery), Wandy, Chacon, and either Woody Williams or Chris Sampson. Marquis could fit in the back end of the rotation for them and Cruz could be the platoon mate in CF for the Cubs. I know there may be some reluctance to help out a divisional rival coming out of spring, but this could be a good deal for both teams.

Thoughts?

You wanna trade Jason Marquis for a guy on a minor league contract? Jason Marquis has value. This is a league that has spent millions on Carlos Silva, Gil Meche, and others like Marquis. Marquis will throw 200+ innings, and he put up numbers comparable to what most teams are getting from the back of their rotation. If the Cubs can't get a helpful player or some salary relief, they are better hanging onto Marquis.

Has Jose Cruz jr been officially inducted into the NSBB perennial trade target list behind Dunn yet?

I'm with Raw, Marquis is worth more than that.

Jose Cruz Jr. can usually be found on the waiver wire at different points during the regular season. I have to agree that Marquis is worth more than that.

And why are we posting Spring Training numbers?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am going to mention something along the lines of what is being discussed in this, and many threads......but here goes....why haven't the Cubs talked to the Dodgers about the right handed CF?

I mean, the Dodgers have AJ/Pierre/Kemp/Either/Young/Repko in the OF, and I almost positive they wouldn't mind moving one of those OFer. I mean, AJ ain't going anywhere. They can't give Pierre away. They shouldn't trade Kemp, but I believe Either (I know he's a basically an older Felix Pie) could be had (and he would make Pie expandable), and would make landing a RH CF less of a priority. Repko and Young, are decent enough 4th/5th OFers that wouldn't threaten Pie's job, plus I doubt it cost the Cubs a farm to acquire any of the three. So again I am thinking out loud, how come the Cubs haven't had discussion with the Dodgers?

How does Ethier help the Cubs situation? He's only a corner outfielder, and the Cubs already have one of those in Murton.

Repko would be a better option, although he's basically a worse version of Jay Payton for what the Cubs need him for without the contract.

Delwyn Young is a new OF who has never played CF that I can find.

So I can see Repko as a cheap alternative, but he's really not ideal at all.
