FWIW, the writer who predicts Marmol will close, Gordon Wittenmyer, also believes the Cubs will acquire another centerfielder because Felix Pie is not getting it. You see, Pie's hit two home runs this spring. And according to Wittenmyer, "after having it pounded into his head for years to play the little-man's game, it's not the kind of skill he needs to show to be of any use to the team."

Hmmmm.....

Um, did he seriously write that?

Isn't that Bobby Rayburn? What a tandem he and Juan Primo could have been.

They all look to same.

During the game on Saturday against the D-Backs, Brenly was talking to Piniella about Pie and about how he needed to "hit the ball on the ground" more. I know that Pie's speed will enable to get many more infield hits then the average player, but I cannot fathom why a manager would instruct anyone to "hit the ball on the ground" on a regular basis.

1. Look up Pie's stats this spring.

2. See that he has an OPS over 1.000 and a solid BB/K rate of 4/5

3. Forward sports writer's article to FJM.

I think chances are good Marmol is again the best reliever. He's the youngest and most talented of the group. At worst, I think he'll be a close 2nd to Howry, unless Wood completely dominates while staying healthy all year.

I saw that I thought it was Truffle posting with his disdain for the older population. I can't believe I am saying this but Wood has seem to finally matured and looks a lot more confident. 98 mph is showing a heck of a lot of talent, along with his other pitches. I give Marmol his due but I see him as one more year and more more pitch away from that position.

If he would have been a kid with a background as a pitcher I think he would be ready now.

It has also worked out to his advantage as far as injuries to that arm.

Good to be in this delema

There are loads of effective relievers with only two good pitches, I think Marmol should get the nod, the only disaster that could come of this is if Lou chooses Howry.

I know most hitters like to stay in the same spot when it comes to the batting order, I wonder if relievers feel the same way? I'd think they would like to know if they are usually going out in the 7th, 8th or 9th in a close game.

I just want Marmol to get a little bit more confident with the two he has. I am not advocating Howery but at times last year he was perfect for that situation, such as throwing well in the 8th and keeping his momentum in the ninth giving the other a rest.

I would think that if a guy needs to get infield hits to be successful they probably shouldn't be a major league player.
