Colby Rasmus, Cardinals

I think he's got the best shot of any non-Cub. The Cardinals' fans are not going to shut up about him and his hype will be impressive if he gets a starting nod out of spring training.

I don't get this ... why does everybody keep just posting his name, and other people quoting it? How did this start?

I think early on last year, a lot of people were misspelling his name. So they'd write out his full name/correct it and quote it over and over.

At least, I think that's how it started.

IIRC it was in the minor league forums when Soto was absolutely annihilating AAA ball and management were too soap dropping stupid to call him up, so after like his 4th or 5th multi hit game in a row, i think sethuel or someone else just quoted his name emphatically, and i guess everyone else picked on that from there.

But like all other NSBB inside jokes, their origins matter little as they are all accredited to the strange randomness of this great site ;).

I'm extraordinarily proud to say that I've never just quoted Geovany Soto and not had any comments.

Not that I have any problem with people doing it, I just wont do it.

the cards should come up with a way to keep him in AAA until mid or late may, i forget which. that'd keep him under their control for a year longer. if they do that, he'd have to have a Braun like year to get ROY.

Pretty much. Soto would be doing his amazing greatness and the ridiculousness of his not being in Chicago (especially when Koyie Hill was backing up) would be summed up perfectly by seth by just simply typing "Geovany Soto" (no quoting at this time). As it got more ridiculous people began to quote seth. I'm guessing it spread from minors to game threads to baseball discussion, to the infestation that it is today.

I'd say Kosuke should be the EARLY favorite, due to his experience in pro baseball. But don't count out kids like Steven Pearce, Colby Rasmus, or even Maybin.

see if you click here, you can see what most of the minor league box score threads were like. soto would have a big game, and then several people would talk about how idiotic it was that the best catcher in the organization was at AAA, blocked by two guys who were, frankly, terrible.

so after soto blew up yet again, there was a thread in which everyone was pissed about soto still being in iowa, and sethuel just wrote, as a post, "Geovany Soto"

it just took off from there. instead of posting "why the hell isn't soto up" we'd just quote "geovany soto" since there wasn't much more that needed to be said. i believe that i was the first one to quote it without writing anything, in this thread.

And even with the explanation, it's still not funny.

There is not a single joke I can think of that when explained to death increases in its humor. If you don't feel the GEOVANY SOTO, you just never will. But let it continue for the joy it brings to us that appreciate it.

Here's my prediction:

1. Fukudome

2. LaRoche

3. Rasmus

4. Maybin

5. Soto

6. Headley (hurt #'s by playing in Petco)

7. Brian Wilson (I think he's a rookie in '08)

8. Towles

9. Bailey

10. Scherzer

I'll change the list if Wilson isn't rookie eligible.

Bruce will be rookie eligible in '09 thanks to Baker. :D
